What-EVER this is still funny:

“Bad Habits” seems to be about how his lady is a drug that he craves like…um, a drug. When she is not there, he wants to be having sex with her. When he is having sex with her, it is like having an overdose. Y’know, of sex. Immediately afterward, he realizes that he still owes books (presumably about sex) to the library, and when he goes to return ( Read more... )

Yeahhh. I still think the "lyrics don't need to make sense as long as you sing them all sexy!" argument is the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard, plus I think I had a good point about how the three mainstream genres that factory-farm material are also the three genres that routinely and wholeheartedly accept actual nonsense as lyrics, but I'm really not up for being called a racist again, so.

That was when I gave up, too. YOU GUYS ARE JUST DEFENDING A RACIST was too "Paris Wars" for me. Anyway, Frank was right to bring up Nelly Furtado -- her lyrics are often a deal-breaker for me, and I will never forgive her for putting "with my mouth I could sing you another brick that I laid" into the most gorgeous song ever. Though I like piratemoggy's hearing of it as "with my mouth I could sing you another bridge that I laid."

I got angry at those results all over again yesterday when I realised that fully HALF the voters had put Maxwell LAST.

Lyrics: it's weird, the past few years have seen them rocket up in my priorities for pop songs. Basically, if I LOVE a pop song, I'll have to love its lyrics. But bad lyrics are only a deal-breaker if they're put front and centre in the song; both Nelly F and Maxwell are more impressionistic, fragments of half-heard poetry rather than coherent narratives. Which is fine, especially when allied to music and delivery so beautiful.
