Holy Harmony
Jonathan Goldman
2006
Jonathan Goldman is a composer and innovator in using sound frequencies for healing purposes. His past albums have focused on chakra activation through Tibetan singing bowls, drones, and om chanting. For Holy Harmony, Goldman uses a series of specially tuned singing forks to recreate the Hebrew letters corresponding to the name of Christ (Yod Hey Shin Vav Hey), which are simultaneously chanted by Goldman and guest vocalist Sarah Benson. Their combined and layered voices create beautiful waves of harmonic convergence that emerge out of the silence to slowly transcend the difference between their voices and the listener (and the forks) before receding back into silence. Listen deeply and you can feel your cells vibrate to these cosmic frequencies, healing and realigning the centers of your soul, while your conscious mind trances out on the repetition of the basic pattern.

A single disc-long track, Holy Harmony stretches out for over an hour repeating the same phrase in slow cycles with breathing space in between. It's not really a disc to play in the car or have on in the background at a party. It's a disc for you alone or with friends or clients for group meditation or healing work. Even if you don't quite make it through to the end of its running time, it's practically guaranteed to bring a sense of rooted calm as well as growing reverence for the miracle of your own life and respect for the lives of others, things, and even the miracle of nonbeing.

This is not an album to be "listened" to as music or even as a meditation guide per se. It's a disc to be lived in, it's an atmosphere, a primordial comfort blanket of sound, like an ancient grandparent whose strange austerity belies wisdom and a sense of grounded universal love. Goldman and Benson may be chanting the same words over and over, but there's no mistaking the unique power they bring to every round of breath. These aren't just words; these are "the" words and Holy Harmony is ground zero for the spirit. From these sacred tones and combinations you can feel the original consciousness itself coalesce out of the void, the larger soul's call to waken into time from the slumber of infinity.
