Seriously, cateract surgery is a whiz these days. There's even been huge advancements in the past 5 years in how the surgery has become so less invasive and disruptive to the ocular tissue than it used to be. Surgical lens implants that are done at the same time are fantastic. My mother is seeing damn near 20/20 out of the eye that just had the cataract done a month or two ago with the new lens (she still needs glasses to read though because it involves both eyes, one still needing to be refracted.)
He should walk out on his own or with a little assistance since he'll have one eye patched. He should keep the patch on as they advise -- esp at night. Have him take pain meds if he's uncomfortable (really just tylenol is needed) and religiously use the antibiotic and antirejection drops as prescribed. Make sure they are filled before he comes home. He'll likely follow up with the surgeon 24-36 hours after the procedure. That's the most important part of the surgery!
Cataract surgery is sooo much simpler nowadays. It is a short outpatient procedure, done under local anesthetic, in which the clouded eye lens is extracted and replaced by a new flexible plastic one. This is an extremely common operation. The resulting vision is often much better than before, with near 20/20 results requiring only reading glasses.
Since most people get cataracts if they live long enough, we can all expect to have this done in our future.
Not all of them just use a local. My medical director and his group do them (and cornea transplants) in one of our surgi-centers under IV sedation with ativan and versed. It helps to stop the moving of the eye with a fully conscious patient. Depending on the level of sedation (some just do PO valium or ativan, others a deeper level of sed), they're in and out in a few hours.
