Well, I just found out the hard way that PayPal is now charging fees for receiving certain payments with Personal accounts. Long story short, if you look at the Send Money page in PayPal, There are now two categories to choose from: "Purchase" and "Personal". If you choose any sort of purchase when you send money, it seems the recipient will be ( Read more... )

Yeah, and if you take too many personal payments they'll get suspicious, and you could lose your non-premier paypal account. Messy!

Fantastic. XP

Only thing I REALLY need to be able to accept on that account is payments from my boss though... So if they see monthly payments from the same company labeled as money owed for work done, hopefully they wont be dumb enough to think those are purchases. >.>;;

Well that and money transferred over from my Premier account, but again, I'd like to think they're not stupid enough to flag those as purchases...

Yeah I think if that's your only "personal" activity, it should be fine. I believe the "Personal" transactions were created exactly for stuff like that.

WTF? I don't even remember them writing anything about changes like that. Do they just do this shit? Every day it gets to be more of a pain in the ass to use their service.

See, that's because they're slimy and don't actually write changes in their emails. They just send out a generic "we updated stuff. you can go look and see what we changed" email and most of us are too lazy to do it and/or assume that they only changed some minor, unimportant, legalese crap. But apparently June 3rd the changes were more massive:

So... basically this really Fs things up for people who only use PayPal and will only take PayPal.

What am I supposed to do? Use Purchase most of the time and take a hit on fees because if I use Personal too much (where there aren't fees) they'll get suspicious and make my life hell?

Well, they sort of made it a rule a long time ago that you had to use a Premier account if you were selling stuff, so I guess this is just them enforcing it? If you're selling expensive BJD stuff it's probably best to do things the "right" way to make sure you have protection against chargebacks. :\

On the plus side, sites like this one make it easier to incorporate the fees into your asking price. Like if you really wanted $200 for something, you should charge $206, etc.

It IS really obnoxious though, after so many years of personal = free it's gonna confuse a lot of people. There's a big fuckload of changes coming on June 15th for eBay too. Not looking forward to that.

Oh FFS, the fees vary based on the buyer's country also. Looks like even personal payments aren't free if they're from outside the USA.
