Christmas has become an entirely secular and consumeristic holiday. Actually, it has split into two holidays. The religious celebration, and the orgy of gift-giving that just happens to occur on the same day.
I disagree, Christmas is not a completely secular holiday. It is still a Christian holiday that has many Christian traditions. People may be celebrating it without being conscious of the religion, but that does not change the fact that it is an integral part of the holiday. Traditions and rituals may be performed without considering the religious meanings, but they are still there. The point I was trying to make with Blaine was not that I necessarily want to have rituals/traditions because they are religious, but rather, like Christmas, they are religious to some but I am practicing them not for the religious value but for the traditional value. This does not mean that the religious value is removed from the rituals, but when I celebrate them there are different meanings in my actions that are important to me.
