i'll change fate (just for you).
pg. - hankyung/heechul.
a/n: just a thank you for mikky, because skyglazed would be nothing if not for her. happy debut ♥

heechul remembers eight plus one years ago when he had tried to fly, off a diving ramp with all his clothes on, into an open lake while on vacation with some friends. it had been winter and foggy and cold, cold and his three idiot friends cheered him on from down below. kangin's voice was the loudest.

he remembers dropping like a stone, creating ripples and then freezing as his clothes weighed him down like a bronze anchor. his wings hadn't appeared the way they were supposed to, and he hadn't told them that he didn't know how to swim, and he doesn't know what gave him away but suddenly kibum was there and so was hankyung.

the next day they pile into the car and laugh, and pretend it never happened but hankyung still remembers how cold heechul's body was in his arms and heechul still remembers the way hankyung's eyes lined red.

two plus one years after the incident, and heechul knows that he could've been more, more than a teenager that didn't want to grow up but he never once doubts whether he's happy or not.

the place he stays in with his three idiot friends is small and all they have is one big room and one small kitchen and one bathroom that's somewhere in between, but he knows he fits in where he never fit before. he's just as big of an idiot as the other three, still sitting around in their one big room drinking and playing cards together on days off and trying to remember how to fly.

kibum still mutters when he gets kicked off the mattress by kangin at some stupid time in the morning because he has to go catch an audition and kangin has a great body clock. that, and the fact that kangin still has to wake up early to deliver newspapers and buy breakfast. heechul still believes that he'll become a professional writer one of these days, that someone will take one look at him and know, so he keeps all his fairytales in his bottom drawer instead of socks.

and hankyung, hankyung is there because of heechul.

heechul had met hankyung back when he was thirteen. kim heechul has always known who he was, what he was, so while other boys talked about boobs and pretty girls with sleek hair, he thought about how to make that chinese boy stutter and forget everything he learned in his korean classes.

so while other people called him strange, weird, an alien, he was always just heechul. they could've easily been strangers but heechul liked the way hankyung laughed, like handpicked flowers from a first love.

summers passed by with road trips and following each other instead of just standing side by side, strangers in that sense. when hankyung was in front, heechul watched for the glint of the other's wings when the dancer shined too brightly.

heechul never asked what hankyung saw when he trailed after him, or if he looked at all, but that didn't keep him from wondering, hoping, even though he has always known that he's just heechul.

now, twice his age from when he had met hankyung, plus some number of months, but they're still pedaling backwards against time.

they go on another road trip, with kangin and kibum, in that rusty car kangin had gotten as a sweet eighteen birthday gift from his neighbor down the street. the first night, they sleep on the highway and watch for shooting stars that don't appear on the roof of the car, edge of the world.

sunrise comes with heechul and hankyung huddled in the backseat, legs tangled and hearts as close together as they've always been, wide awake with their legs dangling off the ground like they really could fly.
