Digital power

Woke up this morning to no power. I look up my payment to the power company on my cell phone and it says that it would have arrived by the first. Its the third. I call the power company and they say they haven't received it. But I can make a payment on the phone and the power will come on right away when they signal the digital meter ( Read more... )

Yeah, I know, right? Furthermore, apparently its entirely legitimate in this state for somebody to freeze to death in their unheated houses because the gas company can't be arsed to come around and turn it on. They have a 8 day lead time on turning on service, which is absolutely unbelievable to me.

I think there's a law in my area that prevents cutting people off of electric or gas in the winter.

Digital meters and remote control are pretty common these days. They've been the standard on new homes for over 10 years now in most States and many homes have been retro-fitted in States like California, Massachusetts, New York, etc. It really just all depends on where you live and who the power company is there, and how old your home or hook-up is. Ironically the US is behind the curve in regards to digital meters - most of Canada is on them as is most of Europe, though many European countries are a little more socialist than America.
