Ok so a lot has happened since February 2009 when I last posted.
- Steve's transplant
- I graduated
- Elena started Kindergarten
- I got a new position

Keep in mind that both of the activities you're talking about are socially dynamic. They involve others, and they change over time.
I can't say for boating (cause I suck at that) but I can say that sports (and most other outdoor activities) have a diminished role in my life now.
Gaming and the group chemistry and social dynamic there constantly change and generally not for the better of each particular group. The wreckage of many campaigns in the past is a whole other post though...

It is hard not to get attached to people that literally save your life. The problem I had is that I attached too much of me to them. I shouldn't have attached my ability to them. I should have separated emotion and skill. I am trying to figure that out now.
Sports groups in general would probably just fall apart and go on to another group/team. Since this sport adds a life & death element, I don't think most people slip from one group to the next with white water kayaking. At least not until they are exceptionally good (or at least think they are).
I am glad I have friends that seem to be around for extended periods of time. :)
