Some reflections on Dissidia. No heavy spoilers in here, as I've only cleared Cloud, Cecil, and am on the last chapter of Firion's story arc.
- Things I love: the music. Composed by the same guy who did Crisis Core. I love how he can put a new spin on classic FF music and not take away from the integrity of the original music, or in some cases make it flat out better.
- More things I love: versatile fighting styles.
- Something I hate: versatile fighting styles. I get used to one person, and then immediately have to learn someone else. As I'm a favorite of the hack to pieces and ask questions later style of fighting (brute force over strategy, in all my RPGs) I don't do well with any of the long ranged fighters, but oddly enough I've gotten much better at making good use of Firion's both long and short range attacks. But I do better with Cloud and surprisingly I can clear the Arcade pretty well with Zidane.
- Graphics are fantastic and I love all the battle maps taking from the original games. I especially love the Magitek Research Facility. ♥ I also like the ability to get alternate outfits for the characters, but Cecil's is kind of boring (they just changed the blue to red) and Firion's makes me giggle at how weird his hair gets.
- Another thing I hate: DP. I'm lucky to clear a stage with 1 DP left over, but more often than not with -1 DP or at some points when I really suck, -2.
- Okay, this dialogue... Is the original game this silly, or did it just translate that badly? To the credit of the voice actors, they act it very well, but half the things they say I kind of wonder if most of them were standing there in the recording booth going, "Do I really have to say that?" All the talk about light, darkness, and wild roses. lol. It's just so... it's like Tetsuya Nomura just took all his weird obsessions with those things and put them into full overdrive mode for this game.
- I love Steve Burton as Cloud, I think his voice is perfect, but what is up with his odd William Shatner speech patterns? He has this strange, pregnant pauses between words that don't actually require them. What?
- I think Yuri Lowenthal as Cecil got the worst for the cliche, silly dialogue, but I've only played through 2 story arcs and almost finished a 3rd at this point. It could very well get worse!
- I thought Squall was David Boreanz again. Alas, he is not. But the fact GOLIATH from GARGOYLES is Chaos is squeeeeee. ♥
- And onto the fandom aspects, Firion has chemistry with EVERYONE in this game. I foresee much slash featuring him in the future, not that I particularly mind. He's growing on me. He seems like such a blind dip the way he talks to everyone. He has no idea what fan girls will do to him in fandom. Kekeke.
- I never jumped on that whole Leon x Cloud/Cloud x Leon thing from Kingdom Hearts and then suddenly, for no reason, there's this random little scene of Tidus running after Cloud and Squall and being like hey hey heeeeeeey guys, and both of them are completely ignoring him. For some reason, that little scene made me go, "I could totally see those two." (And I generally don't slash Squall, because he and Rinoa are adorable -- yes, I like that pair, and I love that game.)
- The Emperor would totally be played by David Bowie in a movie.
