Hika Room August 2015

From reader Kokopen
“Me and my friend are producing something based on our interest but we have strong feelings of “wanting to do this” our own way, and we cannot really progress. Of course we give in, but there are parts where we cannot give in to each other… I heard that JUMP has discussions for the concerts, so what do you do when your opinions clash?”

Hikaru:
I think the important part is your presentation skills. It is the same when JUMP is having a discussion. When you think of a good idea, it is easy to say “wont it look cool if we use this lighting for this song?” but during meetings, more detailed conversations come out like “with this lighting, we want to have a new costume too” “is the cost alright?”. It is not right to just say “I want to do this” or “I want to do that”. Of course, our opinions clash. My opinions often clash with Yamada. Keito does say his opinions but his points are weak and often gets rejected.  I think that might be because his presentation skills are not good enough. But I do try as much as possible to listen to Keito’s opinions. When I say “Then, should we try xxx there? For that, we should do xx here…” and while saying this, the members go “Ahh, that’s right” and it feels like they have started to look for the important point. There are many times when Yamada will still be thinking alone and suddenly say “Why did the conversation become like that?” During such times, we have to present again to Yamada starting from zero. So meetings are really tiring (laugh). But if you start with detailed opinions from the beginning, you wouldn’t be able to proceed. I think it would be better if you could just settle on a certain opinion, and with that build up the production on detailed parts.

From reader Chiharu
“We have to compose a song for our music lesson. We have to do everything ourselves including the lyrics and melody. The theme is “class song” but I cannot think of any good lyrics. Hikaru-kun, please give me some advice!”

Hikaru:
For composing a song, the theme is important but that has already been decided. Then decide on an important word which you would like to convey and using that as a goal, try writing the lyrics. For this case, start from creating a good phrase by thinking of a special characteristic or memory of your class which anyone can empathize with. You can use a questionnaire too, and everyone can discuss while stating out the good and bad points of the class. With such a framework, I think it can lead to lyrics. Also, something I bear in mind when writing lyrics is to show realism as much as possible. I think I sometimes use fantasy words like “You become a light~” but I think it is easier to convey a situation with realistic lyrics. But you have to be careful not to let it sound like a diary! Rap is like that too, it is better to have a technique where smart expressions are used and a phrase that comes out in front appears again at the end. That isn’t that difficult. I did that in Sam and Pinky too. There are repetitive questions of the relationship between “you and me” in the chorus, but in the end the answer is “I definitely need you”… something like that!

From reader Kazukingu
“I like JUMP and I have started to admire Johnnys. How do I become cool like Hikaru-kun?”

Hikaru:
To become like me, you have to be born in Miyagi prefecture. This rough but leisure personality of mine, is because I had been brought up in the nature of Miyagi. Joking, I am troubled when I am being told something like that (laugh). I wonder if Kazukingu has thought of joining Johnnys? You are only 10 years old, and it is important whether your parents support your decision, but the most important is your own determination. If your parents are against it, you have to show them your seriousness. And for the actual audition itself, I guess you just have to enjoy being yourself. Don’t let yourself regret anything too. During the self-appeal time, there are people who do backflips and stuff. I did not know anything except dance, so when I saw everyone’s skills I went “so awesome!” and clapped my hands while enjoying. Now that I think of it, I guess it is good that I was just being myself (laugh). For dance, it is okay not to be good from the start. I think you can be closer to your dream as long as you show them how you do not give up even if you cannot do it. Work hard!

Hika Room March 2016

From reader Sai
“I am not good in interaction with big groups. Even if I hang out with my friends, there are only two of us, or three at the most. JUMP has 9 people and is a big group, so Hikaru-kun, please give me some advice on how to get along well with a big group”

Hikaru:
Honestly, I am also bad in moving around in a big group (laugh). I don’t gather in big groups in private. When I eat with my friends who have the same music interest as me, we have about 5-6 people though. During such a time, I don’t do anything. I smile while listening to their interesting conversations. When it comes to work, in front of the camera, I just turn my switch on and I am able to enjoy that situation. So even though we have 9 members, I am able to enjoy myself and am also able to take charge of things. In the first place, when I think of why I am bad with big groups, it is probably due to the reason that I am someone who moves and talks really slowly. When I talk with the members in our dressing room, it is common for me to think “it is the next topic already? (sweat)” I cannot keep up with everyone’s pace. But when we know each other for long, they know that “Hikaru-kun just listens to the conversation and laughs, and seems like he is enjoying” and so it is comfortable being with them. So I think Sai-san should also first understand why you do not like big groups, and try analyzing it yourself. Try doing it naturally instead of forcing yourself to lead?

Hika Room April 2016

From reader Pinamaru
“I am in the volleyball club and I am the only first year student who got chosen for the new team. I am happy that I was chosen but I get nervous and I cannot play well as I always do. Hikaru-kun, what should I do?”

Hikaru:
For my situation, it would be music. If I get chosen and am asked to play this song with the bass, it will seem difficult. I think it is common even if I fail during practice. For me, I will think that this is my current highest level at this current stage. On the other hand, if I succeed during practice and think that “I will probably succeed in the real show too”, I will definitely get nervous. If you think that way and treat the failures you have during practice as “your own strength” and “you are still far from succeeding”, I think you will feel more at ease. In another way, “you have to aim for perfection”. But it doesn’t mean that “it is okay if you fail” but it means that until the real thing, there is a need for a number of failures and effort. Practice doesn’t lie to you. But no matter how much you practice, if you get too nervous and you are unable to bring our your real strength during the real show, everything will be gone to waste. So the important thing is the preparation so that it does not happen, I think it works the same way for a player and an artiste. You definitely have the skills since you are chosen as a regular player. Next is your practice and the control of your mentality. Throw away all thoughts of “I am sorry that I am chosen to be a regular with such skills of mine” and I hope you can put your feelings at ease.
