Touch

“Luke!”

Luke stiffened as he heard the familiar voice and closed his eyes briefly before turning to look at the small, slender young woman hurrying towards him. Leia’s smile seemed to make the room look brighter and she reached for him with arms outstretched. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere! Why did you leave so quickly? Admiral Ackbar was looking for you.“

Luke accepted her embrace but leaned forward so that only their upper bodies actually touched and then quickly pulled away & grasped her by the arms. He’d learned from their earlier embrace that it would be better for him not to get too close.

“Leia…I…I’ve missed you.”

Leia’s smile faltered a moment, unsure suddenly. “Luke? What‘s wrong? You said you‘d tell me.”

He shook his head and smiled. “It’s nothing. I’m just…glad to see you. And tired. Very tired.”

Her dark eyes searched his face, probing, seeing into his soul as no one else had. She tilted her head, trying to see his eyes more clearly even as they broke contact with hers. “Don’t lie. I can see something’s wrong. Did you see Yoda?”

“Yes. Yes, I saw him. He’s…passed.”

“Oh, Luke! I’m so sorry.” She reached for him again but he quickly wiggled away from her and took a couple of steps away. She watched him and slowly let her arms drop to her sides.

He looked up to see she was frowning. She was hurt. They’d been close. Too close. He couldn’t allow that anymore. Things were different now.

“Where’s Han? Has he fully recovered from the carbonite? He looked well enough.”

She watched him out of eyes that had seen too much at her young age. “He’s fine. He’s around somewhere. Maybe still talking to Lando about the Falcon.”

“I know you must be relieved to have him back.”

“Yes, of course I am.”

Slowly, she walked to him, stopping just short of touching him, and crossed her arms over her chest. She looked up into his blue eyes. “I missed you too, Luke. You know I feel unsettled when you’re gone.” Her voice had dropped to a whisper, her eyes questioning him.

“I’m…sorry I had to be gone again. But I feel better knowing Han’s here now.”

“Han.”

“I know you care for him very much.”

“Yes. Yes, I do care for Han. But what does that have to do with us?” She reached out her hand and caressed his cheek, her gaze dropping to his mouth.

His mechanical hand reached up quickly to grab her wrist and he heard her quick indrawn breath.

“Leia. I need…to talk to Admiral Ackbar and get a little sleep. I’ll see you at the meeting tomorrow, okay?”

She looked down to where his black gloved hand still held her wrist. Slowly she eased out of his grasp. “Alright. I’ll see you there.”

He turned and quickly exited the room, walking down a narrow corridor that would take him to the elevators. There was no one to see as a tear slowly made it’s way down a cheek still burning from his sister’s touch.
