As if there wasn't enough suck this year. My laptop's motherboard is DEAD! The thing is only 1.5 years old so I am more than a little annoyed. Checking with compac to see if I have a chance in hell with the warranty or if it was only for a year. Q was quoted $500 to fix it from the Geek Squad or gee we could get a brand new one for around that

Sorry to hear about the laptop, that stinks.

I like IDE-to-USB cables for pulling data off of old drives, but I don't really know laptop hard drives and whether they'd need a special connector or not. Something like this might work, but you might need another adapter for the laptopness.

Thanks! Fortunately it looks like a known issue and HP is going to send me a box to send it to them for FREE repair. :)
