An extreme diet to cure Type II diabetes?

For weight/fat loss you may want to look into the Paleo diet. I know several people using it with good results. I can't do Paleo or the diet mentioned in the article because of my Crohn's but I'm also not diabetic.

That's rather poor journalism.

The study was actually done to gain evidence that Type 2 diabetes is purely fat related, so losing weight by any means below a particular threshold will 'cure' you.

That's also a quick'n'dirty check to see if it might be worth doing a proper study into fat-related causes of Type 2 diabetes.

The way it's reported is unsurprising though, the vast majority of journalists and politicians have no clue whatsoever about statistics or science and many (particularly politicians) seem rather proud of that fact.

This is pretty dangerous reporting - while you're not stupid, there will be a people who read that and just go ahead and starve themselves without consulting their doctor.

I find this really, really irritating - this kind of sloppy journalism (extrapolating small and flawed results into very large consequences) is why Measles is coming back in the UK (ref: the MMR 'debate'), and why climate science is so horribly misreported.
