The spammers won!

The spammers have decided that us little guys are not to be allowed to run our own email servers anymore. They didn’t do it via legal machinations rather, they did it the old-fashioned way; brute force.

This is the end of a 7+ month battle between spammers and myself. Until 3 months ago, I ran my own self-hosted mail server. All my domains were on ( Read more... )

I have email from my other domains aggregated on gmail. But the servers themselves are hosted by my ISP (which may employ their own spam filters)...

I'm not moving my sites. Those are still self-hosted here. I'm just aggregating my email, out-sourcing it to Gmail. Wordpress/Akamai does a pretty decent job at preventing spammer commentators. My LiveJournal account is friends-only, twitter is well policed, and my Facebook account is well watched.

The problem is that I have nothing like that for my email server software and I tried.

You could set it up so that gmail has authorisation to send mail as you, setup the server again long enough for the authorisation process, and then take it down.

Lets say I had 5 other addresses I wanted to manage.

I open up gmail, go into preferences and fill out the forms, feed in servers and passwords, gmail will then collect email from those 5, and flag it.

This includes de-spamming.

Next step would be for it to send an authorization email, requesting permission to send email as each of those accounts, so you could have FROM addresses with your domain on it.

Basically, you'd end up still having your own server, the email would hit home, then be downloaded by gmail, and then sent back to you as you view it.
