This spans from New Moon through Eclipse, sort of an AU based on the idea that Edward didn't come back until it was too late- for him, anyway.

The first letter came to Bella as a surprise. Why would Jacob write her when he sees her all the time? It wasn't until she'd read it that it occurred to her; some things are just too hard to say in person.

We've been hanging out regularly for a while now, and I know that you've been going through a tough time....but I can't stand by and watch you do this to yourself any longer. At least, not without saying anything. Bells...you're not who you used to be. You hold in all your pain, and I know who's causing it. But honey, don't you think it's time you let him go? I don't mean to rush you, or be insensitive; you just deserve to be happy. You're young, and though I know better than to say you're too young to go through such pain, you still shouldn't have too. I... just think about it, alright?

Bella's little note back hardly resembles a letter. The closed off response, I know, I do think about it. But it's not that easy. Don't worry about me, Jake is hardly satisfactory to Jacob. He has to try harder, make her see, change something.

I don't think you think about it in the way I mean. You need to pull yourself out of this depression. You need to go out in the sunshine, breathe, and be normal. That's what I'm here for, Bells. I've thought a lot about this, and I really want to be better, happier, but I can't do it by shear force of will. I can't make myself stop loving him, or stop hurting. I understand why he left, and I accept it, but I've been changed because of it. Who can say why we feel the things we do? But Jake, I don't want you to waste yourself trying to help me. I know I couldn't have survived without your friendship, but... I can't give you more than that. I love you more than anyone I've ever known, except for one person; and I don't think it's even possible for me to stop loving him. Nothing and no one can quite fill the hole in me he left.

It kills Bella, too, but she feels like she has to give Jacob the chance to save himself from being dragged down with her. Still, she's too selfish to stop seeing him altogether, even though she knows she should.
He's waited for her for so long... how can he let her go now?

Tortured by both Bella's letter and the sudden overwhelming discovery of his transformation, Jacob writes a goodbye letter.

I agree, but we might as well take it one step further. If you don't think you'll ever see me as more than a friend, if your whole life will be consumed by someone so unworthy of you...then let's just not see each other at all anymore. I can't do this if you won't even try.

It hurts Bella, but she assumes she deserves it for using Jake like she has. Maybe she should just be alone; his help, however well meant, is lost to her. And she can't drag him down with her any longer.

Time passes, and no letters are exchanged. Bella misses Jacob more everyday, more than she should. She misses that feeling of home she felt whenever she was around him, and even though she doesn't like talking on the, she'd give anything to get a call from him. Maybe being alone isn't better...?

Bella blames herself for trying to keep Jacob with her for so long. It's worse now, having had him there for her and then suddenly not having him at all. She rereads his last letter over and over, his words cutting her heart like knives.

Like a light going on, it's suddenly clear to Bella that the pain she feels now isn't because of Edward. It's because of Jacob. When she lost him, everything that hadn't been enough was revealed to be everything she needs. She doesn't know how to try this with him, start their relationship again...but she's going to try.

You were right. I think I didn't realize the truth about us because we're part of each other, and it's hardest to see the answer in situations you're inside of. But I think we can make this work. I want you back, Jake.

A week goes by- no answer. Bella feels helpless. She goes to see him, and seeing him is like getting struck by lightning. She wants every part of him, she knows him so well but wants to know more. But she knows the ball's in his court. He has to make the first move, now. He is hesitant, unsure of putting himself back on the line again. He mentions another girl he's been seeing, but Bella can tell he making excuses. She's just got to convince him to trust her again, give this another chance. Or a first chance, really. She has faith in them.

There's so much I have to tell you, so much I've wanted to share with you. But I'm worried, too. Worried that I'm not good enough for you now, that...I've changed. She needs to be treated like a person.

Bella, however painfully, has to explain to Edward that she's not going to be his redeemer anymore. She's going to be her own person, and that person just happens to be in love with someone else.
