CHARACTER NAME: Keiko Yukimura
FANDOM: Yu Yu Hakusho
CHRONOLOGY: Right after the end of the series.
CLASS: Hero, will keep dog tags just in case they become useful
SUPERHERO NAME: Uba
ALTER EGO: Keiko Yukimura, high school student studying to be a teacher
BACKGROUND:
In the world of Yu Yu Hakusho there are three realms: the human world, demon world, and spirit world. The human and demon worlds are where the specified creatures live and the spirit world is the hub center for the afterlife. The barrier separates these realms from colliding, but weaker demons still slip through. Most humans have no idea that the other two realms (or other beings) exist, which is just how Spirit World wants it. See Spirit World isn’t just the directory for the dead, but it also houses the rulers of everything. The head honchos at Spirit World, King Enma and his son, make all the big decisions about judgment, life, death, and so on. Their underlings include guides for the newly departed, Detectives who deal with demon threats to humans, and the Spirit Defense Force, the supernatural answer to a SWAT team.
Some humans have learnt to fight demons on their own. Using their own life force, known as spiritual energy, they can perform amazing feats against the demon kind. Spiritual energy basically gives its user ‘super powers’ and enables them to use strong attacks, often in the form of projectiles or bulgingly weapons. Every human has a store of spiritual energy, but only a fraction has learned to use it. Of course demons already have their own form of this energy that they can use right back. A few humans even have psychic powers, being able to see the future or sense danger.
Most of these things had very little to do with Keiko Yukimura. In fact, at the beginning of the series she was pretty much a normal teenager. It wasn’t until a fateful accident that Keiko became involved with these matters.
Keiko is the daughter of restaurant owners, and grew up spending her days playing with Yusuke Urameshi, a rowdy kid from her town. Keiko became a role model student, prefect grades and popularity. Yusuke became a nasty delinquent whom Keiko constantly nagged and tried to quell. Despite the fact both were on opposite ends of the social spectrum, the two remained a part of each other lives well into middle school. That is until, Yusuke died.
After Yusuke saved a child’s live in a car accident, Keiko was beside herself in grief. However she gets a shock when Yusuke finds ways to tell her he’s coming back to life. Determined to see it through, Keiko begins to take care of Yusuke’s comatose body after school. During one such session, Keiko goes shopping and returns to find his apartment on fire. Worried, Keiko dashed in side without a second thought and gets trapped in the flames. Unbeknownst to her at the time, Yusuke’s spirit was watching and he gives up a chance to return to his body in order to save her life. Yusuke’s good deed does not go unrewarded, and during a twenty four hour period he is given a second shot to return to life. The only problem is that he must have someone who cared about him kiss him. Naturally Keiko is favored over the other options and after a few cryptic dreams and message from a reaper, Keiko manages to save him.
Shortly after returning to life, Yusuke was promoted to being one of the Detectives for Spirit World, and as such he made a lot of enemies out of demons. Enemies who had no problem going after the one person he valued over everyone else. Keiko finds herself kidnapped by Hiei, a fire demon, and Yusuke after rescued her from that, she ends up being attacked by the possessed versions of the town’s people. By this point Keiko’s getting curious about all the strange happening and Yusuke’s many disappearances, and starts demanding answers. Botan, a reaper and Yusuke’s sort of assistant, tells her enough half truths to satisfy the girl. However, Keiko still demands the next Yusuke goes running off into danger, he lets her know.
When the lives of Yusuke and his friends are threatened, he takes off to fight in a tournament in order to defeat the demon causing them trouble. However, he neglects to tell Keiko that he’s going and she digs the real information out of Botan. Naturally, out of worry and a bit of anger, she follows Yusuke and his teammates to the tournament. There, alongside the other female acquaintances of the team, she cheers them on and helps them out between battles. At first Keiko doesn’t let Yusuke know that she’s on the same island as him, hoping not to burden him with her presence. She’s content with just watching him, thinking that these fights are the happiest she’s ever seen him.
It’s during the fight with Team Masho that the girls’ presence is revealed and afterward, Keiko and Yusuke had off alone to talk. The talking quickly turns to fighting, mostly about Keiko not announcing her arrival. After some sulking, Keiko encourages him to win, showing her full support for his actions. Shortly afterward Yusuke’s spirit beast, an extension of his soul in animal form, hatches and is named Puu. Keiko becomes a regular babysitter of sorts for the little beast from then on out. On the way to the semifinals and after showing up to the wrong arena, the girls’ and Kuwabara find Yusuke lying against a tree. He’s exhausted from absorbing his master’s final technique and Keiko is left to take care of him till the match is over. While he’s out they’re almost attacked by a group of demons but are saved by fighters who had gone against Team Urameshi earlier but had still befriended the mostly human group.
Keiko goes to see the finals round, against the man whom had threatened them all in the first place. Keiko is distraught throughout the fight, not wanting to believe that this is how things were meant to end up. The stress from the event leaves her in a state of shock that is only broken by Yusuke slapping her. As a reward she lays him flat.
Things go back to normal, with Genkai being granted life again. However, soon another threat arises, this time a group of seven powerful humans are trying to open a hole between the human and demon world. Keiko gets caught up in the struggle when she and Shizuru, Kuwabara’s sister, follow Puu to the same hospital Yusuke is fighting one of the seven at. Keiko is injected with a deadly disease but is saved when Yusuke kills his opponent. She also gets caught in the middle of the battle between Team Urameshi and the head bad guy after running out to get medical supplies, though this one she escapes unharmed. After that Keiko roams the city with Shizuru and Puu, waiting for a verdict on the fight.
When Yusuke is called the demon realm to fight in another tournament, Keiko is left behind. He tells her he’s going to be gone for three years, and hurt, Keiko brushes him off. She tries to act like the announcement isn’t bothering her, but he knows better and gives a quick proposal that momentarily sends her reeling. To which she then returns to being upset with him. No matter the loneliness being without him for such a long time makes her feel, she keeps her promise to wait for him and knows this is something he has to do. We don’t see her again until the end, now a high school student hoping to be a teacher. She meets up with Kuwabara and the rest of Team Urameshi to visit Genkai, who has requested their presence. Keiko comes to hear out Genkai’s final requests on her estate and follows the gang to hang out on the beach afterwards. Keiko, having been quieter than normal, finally bursts out with what she’s wanted to say. Yelling at the ocean, she declares that’s she tired of waiting for Yusuke to come back. Of course, it is at this moment that he chooses to return. Keiko, overwhelmed with emotion, jumps him and delivers the kiss everyone knew was coming.
PERSONALITY:
It should be noted, that Keiko had one of the most normal childhoods of all her friends. As such Keiko is a reasonably well adjusted youth, even considering the fact that she hangs out with demons on a regular basis. She grew up with high expectations for herself and tends to excel at most subjects she touches. She’s helped out in her parent’s restaurant since childhood and is part of the student council at her middle school, both of which had given her a great sense of responsibility. Keiko is polite, reliable, and honest. She enjoys helping out others, whether it be with homework or of helping with chores.
Keiko’s modest, both in dress and personality, and mature. She might be a stickler for the straight and narrow, but she still had the playful nature one would expect from a teenager. She inherently kind hearted and has a tendency to take care of those around her. Keiko is open and warm to the people in her life, a reflection of that kindness. She dislikes fighting, but isn’t a pushover. If the situation calls for it, Keiko will try to defend herself and her friends. She works to right the wrongs she sees in the world and has a fair sense of justice. At first glance, Keiko may come off as strict or inflexible, but when push comes to shove she’ll throw her beloved rules out the window to help someone she cares about. When angered, she’ll not let go easily and has a lot more spunk then anyone would give her credit for.
Keiko’s a supporter, putting all her faith into her friends and encouraging them in their endeavors. She might not always like the situations they get into, but she strives to cheer them on and aid tem in whatever ways she can. While she believes in the people around her, she is human and sometimes that faith wavers. There comes times when she needs the reassurance of her loved ones that things will be ok. When distressed, she tends to become distant. Keiko shows great concern for those around her, especially Yusuke, and only lectures out of worry. She wants the best for her loved ones and wants to see them happy.

COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
Video post-Japanese with English translation:
[The camera adjusts on a teenage girl with short brown hair. She’s looking off to the side with a nervous expression, body leaning away from the device. She stares in the screen after a moment, looking slightly frightened.]
Hello. My name is Yukimura Keiko. Can someone please tell me what’s going on? I just woke up in this strange place. I’m not sure where here is, and I don’t understand what I’m supposed to be doing. I was just home and now… [She visibly deflates, looking more panicked by the second.]
I think there’s been some kind of mistake. I was told something about heroes? I don’t think I’m the person that’s supposed to be here, so I should be sent back.
If someone could just give me some information, I’d be grateful. I need to know how to get home.
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
Keiko walked slowly around her apartment, eyes downcast and face somber. It was hard to believe that only a few days ago she’d been in her parent’s restaurant, helping her dad with the evening rush. Right now she should be in school, studying, and waiting for the bell so she could join her friends in visiting Genkai at her temple. But instead, here she was, sent to a different world with no clear way back. She missed home.
Keiko had thought things would be better, calmer after the last big journey Yusuke had left on. She knew that he’d never really keep himself out of trouble, but Keiko had been hoping that the peace was going to last them a while. But it seemed that trouble followed their group like a boat to a light house.
At least this place wasn’t crawling with demons or forcing them to fight for their lives. It was a normal enough town, if you could ignore the superpowers. It seemed that they were just stuck. Keiko didn’t know which was more frightening. There was usually some big bad to go defeat and after that, it was over. Sure the threat of death was always hanging over their heads and it was scary sometimes, but Yusuke always pulled through and then they could go home. There wasn’t any one person here that Yusuke could beat up and make things better. And that scared Keiko to the core.
She gave up her pacing and sunk into a chair. Keiko pulled out the communicator she’s been given when she’d arrived. She stared at it like it was the answer to all her troubles. But it wasn’t and just staring made her frustrated. She threw the thing at the couch and wrapped her arms around herself. Keiko felt like screaming or hitting something or doing anything but just sitting here and contemplating questions to which she had no answer. She let out a ragged sigh, jumping up to grab a jacket. Pacing the park sounded better then pacing the living room, besides the air might help calm her nerves. “What are we going to do?” She whispered dejectedly as she left.
FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
- By Japanese legend, Uba is a goddess of pine trees, fidelity, and long lived marriages. The pine tree bit fits Keiko’s odd new power and an alternate spelling of Keiko actually means a type of tree. The fidelity and marriage part alludes to the fact that she hasn’t forgotten Yusuke’s proposal. And as an extra tidbit, Uba can also mean an old woman, which Keiko can act like from time to time.
