Second, I actually brought up this character death issue as a little rant on my LJ here and my IJ here. Feel free to read the post and the comments on both sites. I wrote the rant after a random person was happy to read the hate!sex in a fic of mine but not willing to finish reading the fic because of the character death at the end. Fic was Neither Shall Live, Snarry, NC-17, post-Hogwarts.
I'm kind of surprised that this episode didn't mention Torchwood fandom, which was nearly killed off when fanfavorite character Ianto Jones (who was in a canonical same-sex relationship) was killed...so many people ragequit the show and the fandom that it still hasn't recovered, and a good chunk of the fanfic since then comprises "fix-it" stories about why he didn't really die, really. There is a RL shrine to Ianto in Cardiff, still, 4 years after the character was killed, begging the producers to bring him back.
