Dr David Parrish was exhausted. He’d just returned to Atlantis following four days off world to watch the blooming of the “Blessed Goddess” A huge cactus type plant that only flowered roughly every two and half years. It had been such an honour to be invited to view it and had taken hours to talk Mr Woolsey into letting him go alone, as the Denribi frowned upon a military escort. He had eighty hours of video tape and hundreds of digital photos to sort through; not to mention the remnants of that morning’s hangover, a result of the local celebrations after the event. Despite the desire to immediately start cataloguing, he first wanted to shower, or sleep, he hadn't entirely decided which.
He let himself into his quarters, carelessly throwing his jacket over the back of the desk chair. On the end of his bed was a piece of folded paper. Curiously he picked it up, it was thick and fibrous and off-white in colour - Artists Paper - he thought, smiling as he unfolded it.
Drawn across the centre of the page was a rose, caught just opening to a perfect bloom. One leaf a third of the way down the stem; each thorn in sharp definition. He gently brushed his fingertips over the image, not at all surprised they came away with smudges of charcoal.
“Missed you.” the voice came from behind him, he hadn't noticed the doors opening, or closing again as Major Evan Lorne Let himself into David's room.
He turned, still holding the picture, “Missed you too.” he whispered meeting his lover halfway across the room in a welcome home embrace.
