Part 4
They were forced out of the room before they could figure out what was happening. Both Kyuhyun and Donghae both protested as the nurses made them wait outside-the maknae looked like he was just about ready to hit her for pushing them away-but in the end, they both realized there was nothing they could have done to help anyway. Donghae stared at his right hand, wondering if it was his fault Sungmin was in that state…after all, he had been the last person to touch his hyung, but he didn’t mean to hurt him. He actually just really missed him so much…Leeteuk told them not to initiate physical contact for the time being, so even though Donghae really wanted to hug his hyung tightly, he held himself. Never did he think that his simple gesture of reassuring Sungmin that they would always be there for him turn into something like this. He just… Donghae stared at the door but tried hard not to listen to the panicked sounds of the Doctor and nurses---because it reminded him too much of that same night his Father died---before he knew it he was sobbing.
Please, Please… Sungmin hyung.
Don’t leave us.
I’m so sorry.
Kyuhyun sat there feeling numb. After the initial wave of anger---and violence at the damn nurse who kicked them out---he just felt detached. It took him a while to realize he was in shock at the turn of events. Donghae was bawling right beside him but he himself couldn’t really make a sound. His body became suddenly aware of the fact that they might lose Sungmin tonight. It was gripping him, and he couldn’t breathe properly. His eyes felt bleary but his tears wouldn’t come out. He was at loss what to do, both he and Donghae were not prepared to encounter something like this… he thought when he saw Sungmin again he would be able to see some part of his favorite hyung back, but right now he looked even more broken than when he first woke up, and Kyuhyun had no idea what to do. He even wanted to tell himself this was just some long nightmare he needed to wake up from, and when he does he’ll eventually find Sungmin waking him up and asking what was wrong, but Kyuhyun knew, if this was a nightmare…it wasn’t really his nightmare. It was Sungmin’s.
He clenched his fists again, staring desperately at the door.
Please fight for us, hyung.
We need you.
Donghae eventually fell asleep after almost an hour of crying, and Kyuhyun who sat next to him was almost dozing himself, the wait was exhausting, and more than once they tried to ask what was going on from the nurses that went in and out of Sungmin’s room, but after being ignored and told to wait after every time, they just decided to sit down with no choice but to indeed just wait, both hoping the best for their beloved hyung.
Another half an hour passed, but eventually the door opened and Dr. Byun stepped out, looking and feeling far more tired than the two young men he found waiting outside the room, with a sad smile on his face. He walked over to them gently, and with a gentle shake to the shoulder, the younger of the two immediately snapped awake.
“Hyung!” Kyuhyun cried out, he was already dreaming, but he couldn’t tell what he was dreaming about. There was a hand on his shoulder and even though he already prayed to the heavens that the hand was Sungmin’s, he already knew it wasn’t. He looked up to see the Doctor looking at him, a little concerned.
“Are you alright? You look a little pale” Dr. Byun commented softly, but then again he couldn’t blame him. It must have been a long hard wait for the men.
“I’m fine” The maknae said, looking up at the doctor. His throat suddenly feeling dry as he asked. “Sungmin hyung…is he…is he alright?”
The doctor stared for a while, wondering if he should be discussing the details to the young man---who he guessed was one of the youngest in the group, he didn’t really know them, but he heard they were famous, not that he could tell when he meets them-in the end he knew he had to explain what happened and what he has done. His eyes shone sadly. “I lost him two times in a span of an hour” Kyuhyun’s eyes were as wide as saucers and the doctor felt instantly guilty for starting the way he did “His right lung collapsed and I had to intubate him to assist in his breathing. His fever already developed infections and his heart rate was dropping at an alarming rate. I had him hooked to a heart monitor.” He sighed “But his condition is stable for the time being though he still needs close monitoring” he looked down. It was never easy for a doctor to explain these kinds of things to his patient’s loved ones, especially when he could tell it was just as hard for them as it is to him.
“I-it was my fault isn’t it?” surprised, both men turned to Donghae, who had apparently woke up something during Dr. Byun’s explanation. His eyes bloodshot as he looked at them full of guilt “I…I was the one who touched Sungmin hyung last…I…” he trailed off, swallowed and spoke again. “The whole thing is my fault”
“No of course not” Donghae didn’t dare look up. But he felt the doctor pat him on the shoulder, and the overwhelming urge to break down again came over him. “Don’t think that, I can assure you that isn’t the case. Sungmin-sshi was already not feeling well. And I don’t think he’s blaming you for anything” he knew it was a stretch because he didn’t knew Sungmin that well, but his instincts told him so, and it was an important skill for a Doctor to trust his instincts. “He’s going to be alright”
He hoped Sungmin wouldn’t make a liar out of his instincts.
“Well he should…” Donghae whispered, almost inaudibly but the doctor still heard him.
“Can…can we go see him?” Kyuhyun whispered, finally finding his voice after everything the man told them. He was trembling slightly but all that was in his mind was to see Sungmin, to make sure he was really safe and still with them. He needed to see him, hold his hand; he needed to tell Sungmin to continue fighting.
He would gladly fight for him if he could, but this time, it wasn’t a fight Kyuhyun could take over for his hyung.
Even if he would gladly exchange places with him.
Leeteuk thought he almost made his car fly all the way to the hospital that morning. Thankful there were no enforcers that caught him because he wasn’t sure he could keep his usually calm nature if they did. He was shaking, and he couldn’t get Donghae’s crying voice out of his head. Maternal -Paternal-instincts had kicked in when Donghae’s call woke him up first thing in the morning and the next second he was swerving through early morning traffic to get to his dongsaengs.
“Donghae!” He almost screamed when he reached the hallway where Sungmin’s room was located. His heart sank as his mind thought of the worst possible scenario. He found the younger man outside the room and hugged Donghae tightly as he started to sob into his arms. He rubbed soothing circles into his back, whispering soothing words as he was too scared to ask what exactly happened.
It took a while for Donghae to calm down, like Hyukjae, he was never good with controlling his tears and it felt good to have a shoulder to cry on to. Sungmin would always be someone to offer his own whenever one of them was in their crybaby mode, but now he wasn’t there.
Leeteuk hugged him until he felt Donghae pull back a little, obviously a little more calm. He led him to the seats in front of Sungmin’s room where they both sat down. He wanted to ask where Kyuhyun was but held himself as Donghae started to speak. “Thanks hyung…” he said, looking down on his hands. “I…I needed that” he made out a soft chuckle, though it sounded more like a strangled sob.
Leeteuk nodded, he waited for Donghae to tell him about what happened but it seemed like the young man had taken a liking to his silence. He looked up into Sungmin’s room and instantly paled. Words failed him as he stared at his precious dongsaeng strapped to a heart monitor with a tube down his throat. He was so still that one would have thought him dead if not for the steady beep of the machine beside him, indicating that Sungmin indeed was, still alive…but barely.
“H-How?” he didn’t understand, Sungmin was well enough when he left last night, even if the nurse did tell him their aegyo king had a fever, and it was a little obvious Sungmin didn’t feel well but he never thought it would end up like this.
“It was my fault” Leeteuk stared at Donghae incredulously “I…I patted him on the shoulder even though you told me not to have physical contact…” Donghae looked as if he wanted the wall to swallow him whole as looked up to leader “I’m so sorry hyung, I just wanted to…I didn’t know he would…”
He shook his head, knowing Donghae for years now; he could tell how bad the younger was taking this. But he also knew it wasn’t really Donghae’s fault. He blamed himself partly because it happened when he wasn’t there to watch over “No, Hae…don’t think that…you know it’s just coincidence…”
Donghae let out a rather angry hiss, something that surprised Leeteuk, Donghae almost never snaps, least of all in front of him, who the younger regarded as the closest thing he had to a father. “Why does everyone say that? You don’t need to make me feel better; I know it was my fault. At least let me feel guilty for what I’ve done!” he said.
Leeteuk didn’t know what to say. He knew not even Sungmin would blame Donghae, but the younger was too caught up in his guilt to listen right now. Donghae cried out again in his frustration.
“Donghae…”
“It was my fault…now Sungmin hyung is more close to dying because of me.”
Heechul snapped awake from his sleep when Leeteuk told him what happened, he was about to scoff at him for waking him so early in the damn morning but immediately shut up when the other told him about what happened in the hospital, he was almost feeling sick with worry but leader told him to calm down. Yeah right, as if that was something he could do at the moment. He gripped the sheets tightly, feeling close to crying. He realized he hadn’t really cried ever since this whole thing started, and even though he kept telling himself he had to be strong for the others, but right now he felt too weak to do that. He was almost mad at Leeteuk for being able to sense it.
“Hee---“
“Shut it Jungsu” Leeteuk would’ve chuckled, Heechul rarely uses his name, only when he’s upset or extremely angry. “Not one word”
“You know it’ll make you feel better” he said softly, expecting the snort from Heechul.
“It doesn’t really work for me and Sungmin that way you know” he said, heart aching at the thought of the younger. Heechul always knew Sungmin took after him (and that means not just by both being best in drag and the rest of the other members). Sure they didn’t spend a lot of time together, but Heechul could see the way Sungmin tried his learn from him, and even though he doesn’t realize it as much, also learned from the aegyo king.
“Heechul…”
“Call me the moment he wakes up alright?” he says instead, “I’ll finish my duties and come there”
“I understand…”
“Leeteuk?”
“Yeah?”
“He’s going to be okay…right? He’s going to wake up again…right?”
The other line was silent and Heechul was just about to get angry. He needed the answer goddamn it. He choked when Leeteuk answered him; it was not the answer he wanted to hear.
“T-The Doctor said he has a fifty percent chance if he wakes up by t-tonight”
That day, Eunhyuk had a schedule with a new variety show he was given. For the first time in what felt like forever he finally managed to smile. He missed doing variety, he promised to work hard and give his best to make everyone proud of him. He only regretted not being able to go to the hospital that morning to tell Sungmin of the good news. He would have been thrilled. Sungmin told him before how much he had loved his best friend in variety, revealing in one of his past birthdays amusedly that he actually make it a point to watch him in the shows he goes on. He wasn’t going to just admit it, but that was one of the reasons why he worked himself hard to go on more varieties.
He wanted to see Sungmin proud of him more.
“Eunhyuk-sshi are you ready?” the PD came in an interrupted him from calling Donghae who was keeping Sungmin company last night. He nodded readily, feeling almost a little annoyed but he shrugged and followed the producers to where they were going to shoot.
They were going to compete in diving competitions today.
He grinned and stared at the pool.
Man Sungmin is going to get jealous when he hears about this.
He almost couldn’t wait to go back and tell him.
Maybe he could even make Sungmin pout adorably again.
He missed his best friend.
Misses him so much.
“Eunhyuk-sshi, please get ready!”
“Okay!”
He focused on his task at hand, which was probably a good thing because Eunhyuk wouldn’t be able to concentrate if he actually picked up his phone at that moment to hear Donghae’s broken voice.
“Hyuk? I need you to come to the hospital as soon as you can okay...I…it’s…something’s happened to Sungmin hyung…”
Cho Siwon was a very religious man, and that being said he hated any forms of violence…but there were moments he would catch himself only seconds away from performing a very unreligious deed, like in this situation he had almost punched manager hyung in the face because they told him flat out that he needed to return back to China to keep shooting for his drama. He flat out refused, saying he was going to stay here because it was where he was needed. That lead to a long road of bickering and Siwon losing his cool. He had slammed the manager into the wall and was just about to punch him when he caught himself. He immediately lets go and helps the man back to his feet, muttering an apology. “Hyung, I’m sorry…but I really can’t leave”
“I know how you feel Siwon, but you know I don’t exactly have a say in the matter…it’s the company’s decision and your commitment”
He lets out a frustrated sigh and runs his fingers through his hair, almost cursing (almost, because Siwon doesn’t actually curse unless he really means it) at his predicament. But he knew manager hyung was right, and he didn’t have any choice in the matter. Sometimes he really hated that fact. “I understand” he said softly, defeated.
“I’ll try to ask the higher ups again, but bear with it until then, alright?” Siwon smiled weakly, flashing a grateful stare at him. Manager Hyung patted him on the back and led him away.
I’ll be back really soon Sungmin hyung, wait for me…okay?
But the moment Siwon’s plane lifted from the airports in Korea, he knew he was going to go back again the moment he landed.
“Goddamnit”
Ryeowook stared blankly at the script he was supposed to be studying for Sukira later that evening, he kept reading but nothing was coming to him at all, he wanted to go back to the hospital and check up on Sungmin, he had a bad feeling and he didn’t know why….but he couldn’t simply call Donghae or Kyuhyun because the public was still being kept in the dark about what happened to Sungmin, and even though the aegyo king already pulled a week long disappearing act before, that was when they were on hiatus, not so suddenly. Some people had already started to become curious and were investigating the whereabouts of Super Junior’s aegyo king, it was lucky only a handful of people knew about what happened, but some of the curious people were also trying to catch the members off guard to try and find out what had happened to their missing member.
“Ryeowook-sshi?” the eternal maknae jumped when he heard his name, looking up to see Sukira’s PD (the one who has the not-so-obvious crush on Sungmin) looking at him worriedly “You okay? You seem a little out of it”
He let out a nervous laugh “Do I? Sorry noona, I’m fine. Thank you” he said, hoping that would take the woman off his back. But instead she sat down beside him and stared at him closely. Ryeowook had that urge to shrink; things definitely did not look good.
“Ryeowook-sshi---” she began, but he had cut her off, shaking his head. He knew she was going to ask about Sungmin and he had no intention of telling her. She sighed sadly but understood Ryeowook couldn’t really blame her for worrying. Sungmin would never miss a day of his schedule in Sukira unless he really had something, and even if he did, he would usually come in even if he was late, that was how much he had grown to love the radio show passed down to them by Leeteuk and Eunhyuk. “I’m sorry for trying to ask, I was just…” she trailed off, almost teary. Sungmin was very close to the staff, even more than Ryeowook himself and he could only imagine their worry for Sungmin. He at least knew where he was, and how he was doing (even if it wasn’t really that good) but these people, they had no idea… he felt a little sorry for them. “I’m just worried”
“Its okay noona” he said to her, smiling softly. He couldn’t really say more. It wasn’t that he couldn’t trust her but telling her the truth would be more painful than just letting her be worried about her boy. “Sorry I wasn’t focusing on my script. I’ll do that right now”
She nodded silently after that, and made her wait outside the room. She was already at the door when she spoke again. “Oh, Ryeowook-sshi?”
“Yes?”
“Just…well, please tell Sungmin-sshi we miss him…” she didn’t even wait for him to react and went outside. He stared after her and sighed
We all miss Sungmin hyung.
“What do you mean, a 50-50 chance if he wakes up by tonight?” Shindong tried to intimidate the doctor. It clearly worked because the man looked at him warily, but it did nothing to change what he had told them about Sungmin’s condition. “What’s with that chance? It’s bullshit!” he growled angrily.
“I’m sorry” the man bowed his head “I’m doing my best for Sungmin-sshi, but he is still responding at a very slow rate. I’m not sure if his body can hold out if it continues” he shook his head, silently praying Sungmin would make it through, he didn’t see him a whole lot, but Sungmin was far too young to give up on life so soon, even after his terrible ordeal. Dr. Byun gave it everything he knew, in the end everything was now up to Sungmin if he was going to fight.
“He’s going to make it through… he has to” Shindong muttered to himself, he felt his knees buckle and allowed Leeteuk to help him sit down on the bench, he looked up at their leader with an air of desperation. “He’s going to wake up, right hyung? Sungmin’s going to come back to us…right?”
Leeteuk didn’t dare look at him “I…I hope so”
Shindong broke down.
Sungmin you need to wake up.
Wake up.
Please,
Wake up.
But time ticked by and Sungmin remained still in his bed.
