Non-fiction reading for those who liked Master and Commander

Jan 14, 2008 21:33

I might have mentioned that I blasted through the entire Aubrey/Maturin series (the 20 novels that spawned the Master and Commander movie) during my semester break?

I loved the books - but they made me realize how incredibly ignorant I am of the basic European Imperialism/Exploration Time Period. So I went looking for non-fiction, and found The Read more... )

"Guns, Germs, and Steel" was also made into a show by National Geographic. I caught part of it, and it was very interesting stuff. It's out on DVD now, and old enough to ILL. Netflix probably has it too.

Have you ever been to WorldCat.org? It's the "consumer version" of what I use to do ILLs. Doesn't look the same, but has a neat thing of allowing you to peruse the collections of thousands of libraries worldwide, and you can create your own lists. I use it to keep track of what I personally want to ILL, what I've already requested, stuff like that.

And librarians love you too, especially if you bring your stuff back. Fines being paid are just icing. ;)

I've been meaning to read Guns, Germs, and Steel since it came out, but just haven't gotten around to it. I'll have to check about the DVD.

And - no, I'd never heard of WorldCat. Thank you! Lately I've been getting a lot of books from the university, which is linked into a good network, but you can't keep lists. I'm practically purring ;)

especially if you bring your stuff back
Yeah, the books were back months ago, but I was too embarrassed to pay up to an actual person. I know y'all have seen it before, but... it does feel like the very definition of failing as an adult :( But it's over! I'm a real person with a valid card again! And a *list*.

I love the option of keeping lists in WorldCat. Right now I've got one that's a "want to ILL" list and another that's everything that I've read via ILL, so I don't forget which ones I've already done. I've been reading series and related titles, so it's easy to get confused.

The ones that crack me up are the folks that practically do a drama routine when they come in about paying off a huge fine. They've finally screwed up their courage to come in and pay it off, and then we tell them ( ... )
