PICK UP THE PIECES, TAKE THEM HOME

You last this long in the game, you pick up some pretty heavy duty scars. Nobody needs reminding that those scars run deep, inside and out, because they know from experience. Greg knows more than most, Ed thinks.

"Can't save 'em all," he says, while the light in his eyes tells everyone who knows to look that he still wants to try.

Ed wishes he would stop. Just sometimes. Share the burden. But he's guilty himself of shouldering it alone. Of taking the ghosts of people he couldn't save home with him. And worse, far worse: the ghosts of people he didn't want to save.

"He was just plain evil," Greg said once, as they both stared down at a dead man. Ed had heard the note of guilt in Greg's voice and thought, yes. It doesn't make it any more right, though. Does it? To tell the truth there's been plenty of bad guys, but mostly they're just desperate people who need something enough that they'd die for it. It's Greg's job to understand that, to know how far someone will go. Ed just has to make sure they're stopped if they do go too far. And then they both just have to pick up the pieces and carry on.

Every time.
