Reading

I've recently decided that I'd like to get some more reading in, especially fictionwise. I thought I'd ask you, dear readers, for recommendations. Just to give you an idea of what my tastes are, I'm a very big fan of Douglas Adams and Kurt Vonnegut. I also like Michael Crichton's writing style (although the guy simply cannot resolve plot threads ( Read more... )

I'm a big fan of Terry Brooks (especially his Sword of Shannara series) and Tom Clancy.

Not that they're in line with Adams and Vonnegut, but I thought I'd throw it out there, nevertheless!

Sounds good, I'll check 'em out. I kinda like the movie interpretations of Tom Clancy's stuff (especially Hunt for Red October), so that may be worth looking into. Thanks!

tovaks also gave me the what-for for not having read him, so I think that one's a winner, at least if I want to remain friends with you guys. :)

Indeed! Here's the order I recommend:

Ender's Game
Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets
Shadow of the Giant
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

The only reason for this is that in this way the entire series happens in [temporal] chronological order. Also fun to remember is that much of this was written before the widespread use of the internet.

I agree that you should definitely read the Orson Scott Card books. I read that whole list in high school and still read them over and over.

I feel Menh about the Orson Scott Card books (except Enders Game) and Terry Brooks. I did try them. But if you don't like them or even if you do, I recommend in no particular order:

All Bill Bryson starting with In a Sunburned Country and Neither Here nor There

All Terry Pratchett starting with Mort, Reaper Man, or The Truth or Going Postal

Some Heinlein - The Moon is a Harsh Mistress or Have Spacesuit, Will travel (even if it's a kids book)

George RR Martin's Clash of Kings series. I forget which one it starts with.

There's more whenever i think of them. But read those.

Wow! Since when do you read my LJ? ;)

Your suggestions are appreciated! I'll have to check out Heinlein in particular.

I'm a little slow to commment, but some of my favorites are: almost any dystopian fiction, 1984, Brave New World, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep...; for plot-oriented, I really liked some of Robin Cook's medical mysteries. If you can find Acceptable Risk that was kinda a cool one.

(I'd also recommend Ender's Game, in fact that was in the list before I saw that others had already listed it. :-))
