Giles stared - completely at a loss. He knew that The First attacked emotionally, taking the form of the one departed soul that would have the greatest effect. He'd heard the others talking of their encounters - family members, friends - he'd heard that Faith had even seen the Mayor.

He was, however, completely unprepared for what he was currently facing. In truth, he'd never given much thought one way or the other to the well-being of the person standing before him now. Not since he'd seen him taken away. But to have unequivocal proof that he was dead - it hit him harder than he'd anticipated.

"Hello, Ripper."

"You're not him. You think that by taking his form you can somehow, what? Influence me? Persuade me to do your dirty work?

The figure tutted. "Now, Rupert. Is that any way to greet an old friend? Why, it's been years - don't I at least warrant a 'hello'"?

"How dare you. You could have taken any form you wished, and you choose this one? Just had to get the added thrill of watching me mourn? I'll not give you the satisfaction."

The figure said nothing - only waited.

"I tell you, there are worse ways to learn of a loved one's death - you've not broken new ground here. You must be losing your touch. If you're trying to hurt me, you'll have to try harder."

Buffy peeked her head through the doorway. "Hey, Giles - who are you talking- hey!" She swung, sending Ethan tumbling gracelessly onto an unmade bed.

Giles gawped. "Ethan Rayne, you deceitful bastard! Why didn't you tell me you were alive?"

Ethan straightened himself and grinned wickedly. "My dear, Ripper. You never asked." He stood and crossed the room, standing within inches of Giles. "Now - what was that about 'mourning' and 'loved one'?"
