fic: Season 5 episode codas

Dec 25, 2012 13:51

And I realise once more that I haven't been posting here about my episode codas... the last one of which I wrote last night after watching the final episode.

You can find the full series of fics here on AO3. To misappropriate a song, 'it is complete now, two ends of time are neatly tied'.

Thoughts on the codas and the final ep... )

Have been watching all the episodes in the final season. The finale is this coming Sunday. Have already read Destina's comments and know what to expect, will have a box of tissues by my side. Thank you for stressing the hope and the love that fill this (temporary?) ending. And thank you for writing all the codas, which I will read after I have watched the finale.

A big hug, and my warmest wishes for joy and creativity in 2013.

Hello there, my dear friend! I'm glad you've been enjoying the fifth season, and I hope you enjoyed - if that's the right word, maybe appreciated? - the finale. I really feel as if everyone pulled out all the stops to make sure it was done properly - especially Colin and Bradley, bless them.

I hope you enjoy the codas, and that they work for you! I want to write another follow-up, too, but have been too overwhelmed by work and 'pro' writing.

Thank you so much for the hug and for the kind wishes. The sort of joy and creativity you have in mind is exactly what I most hope for - for myself and for you as well. ♥

I don't think it's a bad thing that we cry. We are meant to. For better or worse, that is part of the Arthurian tales - that they tried so very hard, and they lived their dreams for a while, but ultimately it ended.

I absolutely agree. The eventual sadness of the Arthurian legends is one of the reasons they've inspired people for so long. At least this version of the end was all about the relationship between Arthur and Merlin which was the foundation of the show.

Although it made me cry I'm very glad they left us with the possibility of reincarnation in the future. An ending with "hope and faith" was all that I really wanted from the finale (apart from Arthur living of course).

For the love of Camelot, indeed.

I really need to have a good think about why it seems so intrinsic to the legends that they end so tragically. Maybe to make the life and the hopes and the dreams all the more precious? To make the point that it's worth each of us trying anyway, despite the inevitable end to any story? I'm not sure.

I think we can rely quite securely on Arthur's eventual return. No matter how confused I now feel about the Dragon's prophecies, at least it seems very clear that Arthur is The Once and Future King. He'll be back, and Merlin's loyalty will be rewarded. In any case, it's just as well he's spent the intervening time living in the world, so that at least one of them knows what's going on!

P.S. That really is the most perfect icon. It sums up the whole show for me now.

Thanks :) I made it a while ago but only uploaded it recently when I realised it encapsulated everything I felt about the show.

I am with you in terms of tears. I keep saying that, but it's true. I was absolutely weeping with Merlin, for Merlin, in those last scenes. And your thoughts on Arthurian legends, and how they are as much about how it all ended, are so spot on ( ... )

Ah, the crying... I think it's stopped now, but then it might start up again next time I watch the episode! I suspect it will be like listening to Albinoni's Adagio, or Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis - they are so very beautiful as well as so sad, so pure. The only human thing to do in response is weep.

I am more grateful than I can say for your kind words about the codas. It means a lot to me that they meant anything at all to you! :-)

Kudos to Colin and Bradley indeed. They put their hearts and souls into the characters, and were honest, and unselfconscious. They astound me.

You know what? I still haven't managed to listen to the music in the episode. :-) Thank you so much for pointing out that they used the love theme, and at such a time. That's just awesome. Whatever we may feel about the moments in which this show hasn't lived up to its potential - at least they pulled out all the stops, and overdid themselves with the finale. I'll forgive them an awful lot in return for that!

Long may we squee indeed!

I totally agree, and think that this episode will make me weep whenever I watch it, simply because that's what one should do. I also find myself listening to music and inserting the characters into the songs, along the lines of an art meme a friend of mine posted recently, and I've found new insight into those songs and sudden floods of tears that way. Heavens, when the shuffle threw "Into the West" by Annie Lennox at me, I almost had to pull the car over to the side of the road! Not to mention "The Call" by Regina Spektor. And "Same Deep Water" by The Cure. Yikes.

Your codas were wonderful. <3 I know the challenge isn't the same, as the episodes have already aired, but I would love to see something similar for s3 and s4, just because I'm greedy, and a completionist, lol ( ... )
