I'd change my first name to Moraya in a heartbeat if I could (it's basically impossible to do that in Germany though). I'm very okay with my last name (even though I've yet to meet someone who pronounces it correctly on first try *g*), but I absolutely hate my first name. My dad is still claiming it would be a perfectly good and nice name, but he's not the one being teased mercilessly as a kid. So Moraya is who I feel I am. My friends call me Mo or Momo (in RL too), even my boyfriend calls me Mo when he uses my name and not an endearment.
For kids, I am leaning towards old names. Definitely names that most of the world can pronounce (my first name falls in the category of tonguetwister for anyone who's not German or Dutch speaking). Natalia has been on my mind for a girl for a long time, but I'm not really set on anything yet.
natalia is so pretty! i've heard of the naming/name change codes in germany; here in the U.S. you can name yourself anything except something with a number. although one guy tried to change his name to god, don't think he succeeded.
The laws about names are getting ridiculous here. Just a few years ago they've changed it so that you can't give your kids a double last name (as a combination of both mum's and dad's last name) anymore; you have to decide on one, even though both parents when married are allowed to have a double last name. Changing a first name here in Germany is pretty much impossible; there are very few exceptions for it, and unless one has had a gender change or a foreign name that would confuse the average German, it requires grave reasons (like an attest of a psychiatrist that the person suffers greatly from having that name), and even then, the request for a name change can be refused.
My brother told me about someone - I don't remember which country, China perhaps? - giving their son the name @. Written exactly like that *lol*
I've never thought about what other name I could have as my first... and I love my last... Now, as for kids... Girls: Shauna, Siobhan, Marie-Rose (after my grandmother) Boys: Nathanial, Zacharia, Elias....
aww, i love the idea of naming a kid after someone else like a grandma. and those old testament boys' names are great. i love elias as a middle name if i end up naming my son henry; i just like the sound of henry elias. go yanks!
