Guess I wouldn't mind being clever. But not dazzling, exactly.

[ oh, mildmay. she appreciates your effort. really, she does. ]

If you're going to choose clever then why not go the whole way and aim for dazzlingly so?

I'd be distracting. If'n I'm clever, I don't want nobody noticing.

Surely, it would be exactly the sort of thing one would want noticed.

[She's trying not to sound like she's smiling too much, but it's sort of hard not to.]

Oh, that's easy enough. Dazzlingly clever. Being good would be get boring, and I think being reasonably good-looking's enough for me.

Oh, Mrs. Eaton -- I try to think along those lines. I really and truly do. But then I imagine myself with raven black hair and not a freckle on my face and I think that reasonably good-looking doesn't sound so reasonable at all, anymore.

I just don't see why raven black hair'd be that much prettier. Red stands out more in a crowd--if you're going to be divinely beautiful, it might as well be noticeable.

I suppose I would like to be clever, if those were my options given. Cleverness seems the most useful, though I am one who tries to keep goodness in him.

Clever does seem to be the popular option, so far.

Well it is always well to be good, and I suppose it is to one's benefit to be fair of face and form, but if one is clever they can go much farther than where the other two might bring them.

Your words, sir, are quite clever in and of themselves. Perhaps you already are?

And then I wonder if the materials necessary for quilting would turn up in the shops. Hmm.

You're quite right. I suppose if I ever was offered the choice, I would have to decline it entirely for fear of it being ruse.

I'm not sure you can learn to be beautiful, can you?

[ if so she must LEARN IT SOON. ]
