So, you heard the tragedy. now for the rest.
The more I sleep and regenerate, the less surprised I am that my passport went missing at the last moment. And, the more surprised I am that I was actually able to do things like stand and talk.
I've been a pretty broken human being for a while, but it got to a point where I was so broken, I was incapable of knowing it. A vicious cycle, I vaguely remember that I spent most of the last few weeks not able to finish a simple task like taking a bite of food or going to the bathroom. My brain was so panicked and scattered that i'd get half way through something and then start something else, in fear that i'd forget to do it if i didn't act immediately.
A good night's sleep on Friday was a start, but truthfully the weekend was a blur.
My friend didn't have plans last weekend and was awesome enough to suggest we just hang out and do whatever came to mind and sleep a lot. Saturday I attempted to go to the Canadian consulate to see if they could get me a passport (meaning i could fly out and save some of the scotland trip), but they couldn't help in a timely manner. So we wandered around midtown, picked up cupcakes, wandered through stores, grand central station, told stories that we know about nyc buildings and events (my running tally of how many places i was supposed to be standing in when they blew up. it's a fascinating tour, folks!)
Saw Up! (in 3-d. do those glasses have to be so big?) still it was awesome. Sleeeeeeep. sat on the sofa with homemade eggs and bacon watching more movies, sleeeeeeeeeep, introduced my favorite ethiopian restaurant (Awash on 6th st. Indian row if you care), and consequently had my ass handed to me playing billiards. more sleeeeep.
The whole weekend, New York was being the city that i love. Weather was cool but comfortable. the people were quirky and interesting, friendly and helpful, sweet and kind. Puppies were extra cute, buskers were extra talented. My ability to find things (i.e. metrocard, money, phone) were slowly improving. The food - magnificent, the conversations a perfect mix of light and thoughtful.
In a lot of ways it felt like the city was stroking my hair and making shushing noises to soothe me.
Whatever happens for the rest of this week, last weekend my vacation redeemed itself. :)
