Sooner or Later (Gonna Cut You Down) [Reid & Giles, Faith]

Sep 07, 2009 14:41

The smell of hospital coffee did little to shake Rupert out of his quiet panicking. His footsteps echoing ahead of him as he made his way back to the ICU where Faith was hanging on by a thread didn't even register in his ears. All he heard was the sounds of screaming and maniacal laughter chasing after the group as they fled the YMCA. That and a ( Read more... )

Reid scrubbed a hand over his face and looked up at Giles as if he were slightly surprised to see him there. He'd been 'reading' (from his brain) The Little Prince.

"No, m'good," he promised even though he was exhausted. He took the coffee from him and took a drink, burning his tongue in the process but disregarding it. He wasn't hungry. He couldn't even think of eating. "Did you know that doctors believe most patients can hear things around them when they're in a coma? And if they've got someone to talk to them they've got a 65% chance of coming out of the coma?"

He should've expected such an answer. To suggest that one leave the side of a person they care such a great deal about is most times a fruitless effort.

Giles watched Reid with some sympathy -- the man had the habit of verbalizing relevant facts at random, but he knew that at the moment it was out of worry. "Faith," he started, taking a pause to order his words. "She's been in this position before. Twice, if I'm not mistaken. I -- well, you see it's very likely her lineage contributes to her likelihood of awakening. She'll be okay, Reid."

He knew that did about as much good as throwing a bucket of water on a forest fire. Part of him believed it but a larger part doubted highly that she would wake up this third time.

"I-I know," Reid started, getting the cane he was using and rolling it between his palms. "It's j-just that sometimes Faith th-thinks she's n-not as n-necessary as some of the others." Of course by others he meant Buffy and he wasn't entirely certain he was accurate on this assumption. She'd never told him this but he'd added it to the mental profile he kept for Faith in his head. "I-I'm staying to make sure she kn-knows she is."

Rupert nodded. "That's actually fairly accurate." He wasn't sure how much he should reveal, as Faith was a largely private person regardless of the way she acted. "She's...well, it's been difficult, I suppose. Being literally number two. The circumstances didn't help either."

The jet landed just before nightfall. Angel had to hang around inside it until dark fell. Once it did, he took a cab to the hospital. Worry had made a knot in his stomach. This wasn't good. Faith was in a coma and Buffy was missing. Angel knocked lightly on the door before he stepped inside, aware that Giles and Spencer were inside.

Spencer sat up straighter at the knock on the door, looking expectantly toward it. He sat back a little when Angel stepped through. He'd met the man...vampire...once at the Y.

"I c-can get you another ch-chair if you want."

Angel shook his head. "No. I'd rather stand. Thanks. There's no change?"

"She's exhibiting all the normal signs of a coma victim; occasional twitches of the hands, rapid eye movement...she's breathing on her own...her heartbeat is strong. She sh-should be awake but n-no. No change."

Giles had jumped a little at Angel's arrival. He was on edge from waiting to hear from the various covens he'd contacted. They were all currently working on finding Buffy and working through whatever magical "firewall" (as Willow had put it) that was stopping them from making progress.

He watched as Reid updated him on her status, and stood to shake his hand when Reid finished. "Angel. It's -- well, it's not looking very good. I've heard no progress from my contacts. Is Lucy with you? You got the new address to the safe house, yes?"

"Lucy jumped in a cab as soon as the plane landed. She called while I was in the cab. She's there safe and sound," Angel assured Giles. "I also brought Illyria and Lorne. Lorne is with Lucy. Illyria...is supposed to be with Lucy and Lorne. Where she's actually at is anyone's guess. I thought we could use the extra muscle and it can't hurt to have Lorne around."

Reid listened to Giles and Angel without much to add. He could help with the thinking side of things but he wasn't much help with the muscle part of things.

Giles nodded his understanding. Bringing the others was good thinking on Angel's part, something he hadn't even thought to mention. "Thank you, Angel. Shall I relay you with the details? Our endeavors have been quite fruitless so far."

He was obviously weary, without sleep for the past couple of days. Most of his time had been spent on the phone, striving to make sure the rest of the Cleveland team was safe and trying to call in extra help. So far all he'd been able to procure was standing in the room with him.

"I'm afraid we're very much on our own."
