A late birthday party with everyone I've known and loved (mkay, that might be a strong term for some people present)? Is seriously great. Especially 'cause everyone's actually not getting into a huge brawl and hanging out and enjoying themselves. I found out Tara was behind the whole thing, and seriously, she's gotta be the sweetest housemate I ( Read more... )

"Please, go on, open it!" Will the girl never get the hint? I'm having to resort to being less than subtle and right now am near enough thrusting my exquisitely wrapped present into Buffy's hands. It has to be present time - surely that's the whole point of a birthday party. After all, I see half of these people almost every day and the other half I've bearly even met.

"Ooh, small boxes! Small boxes are of the good," I say, taking the package and trying to open it without totally wrecking the bow. "They never contain big nasty demon parts or anything."

I maintain my smile as she takes the box, trying not to look at her like she's a mad thing for that last comment - as if I would give her demon parts for her *birthday*.

I don't think I'll ever understand her.

I take the lid off the box and lift out an absolutely stunning necklace.

"Wow, Anya, it's beautiful!" I say, holding it against me and running into the hall to check it out in the mirror. "I am totally never complaining about you leaving me to run the shop while you go shopping ever again!"

Okay, like this is a cool party, even though stinky Spike is here, and Angel? Spent the whole ride down looking at me like I took his last bottle of hair gel. I mean, please. Like I'd use his generic brand. Whatever!

I guess I should go talk to the birthday girl. I'm glad I don't have to deal with birthdays anymore. I'll always be this young and pretty!

I look up to see Harmony approaching. Whose idea was it to bring her along? Didn't anyone remember how she kidnapped Dawn that time (first time of many)?

"Harmony," I say, maybe a little more snide than intended. "So, you're working for Angel now, are you? 'Cause I heard the invite was sent to Angel Investigations."

"Buffy," I say, matching her tone. "Hel-lo, it didn't say 'everyone except Harmony.'" I roll my eyes slightly and toss my hair.

"Yeah, well it might have if I'd had any say," I mutter. I look around.

"So, where's the Prince, couldn't make it?" I ask pointedly. "Or did he head back to Transylvania and the Euro-babes he's probably got stashed there?"

Less with the talking - more with the opening of the presents! Not that anyone's going to have gotten Buffy anything better than my present, but still. I randomly grab a package off the table of gifts and pass it to Buffy, though I have to practically trust it into her hands. Does the girl not get the whole thing of presents???

"Here, open this one next. I don't know who it's from, but it's got pretty paper! Open it so we can see what's inside!"

I laugh at her eagerness--you'd think the presents were for her. It's actually kind of overwhelming, but I start opening the gifts as people hand them to me and show them around the room.

Ooooh, presents! I shove my way between Spike and Angel to get a closer look.

Someone hands me an odd-shaped package and I open the plain paper to reveal a strange looking homemade...uh, is it art? There's a disk with a strange symbol carved in it, along with sprigs of fragrant herbs and some little charms hanging off it on a silk cord.

"Who's this from?" I ask. "Did you make this, Dawnie?"

"Me? You kidding?" I make a face at her. "I got you Bath & Body Works."

She should know by now that I don't do the homemade crafty stuff.

"Ooh, I love the smelly bath stuff! Thanks, Dawnie!"

Come to think of it, the thing looks more like some sort of magic whatsit than arts and crafts, anyway. I glance at Willow and Tara, neither of whom look like they've ever seen it before, and hold it out to see if Giles or anyone knows what to make of the thing. "Does that symbol look familiar? I think I'v seen it somewhere before..."
