I'm Christmas inclined... but what's this with the tree? I've only been told that it's a time to get together with friends and give gifts.

What? The tree's an integral part to the whole gift-giving experience. You get a nice tree and you pop it up in your living room and then after it's decorated you put all your presents underneath it to wait for when they'll be opened.
