Icon tutorial 004

Nov 10, 2005 12:40

There hasn't been many graphics updates. I blame uni for it all. I've been a bit busy and to be honest I can't seem to concentrate on icons right now... *sighs* pity, because I really enjoy making icons.

Anyways, I am sure no one wants to hearread my whining... let's get to the purpose of this entry. Icon, yay! *grins*

I hope this tutorial is not confusing... I mean it has quite a few layers and I might have explained myself wrongly here or there. But in that case ask and I'll try to explain better. The icon also ended up a little different than usual... still getting used to this look, but I hope it doesn't look that bad. ^__^

Please comment with opinions, doubts, sugestions and all that. :)

On to the tutorial!

icon tutorial 004 - "caught" (Harry Potter
icon)

This tutorial uses this image of Harry and Hermione in the third Harry Potter movie. The image came  from
Veritaserum.com. I resized the image and then cropped it to look
like the image on the left. That is the base! ^__^

Sharpen your base (filter --> sharpen --> sharpen) once and "fade" it to 70% (edit --> fade sharpen --> 70%); then desaturate it by -50 (image --> adjustments --> hue/saturation --> -50 in the saturation box)

Duplicate the base twice. Set the first one (layer1 copy) to screen, opacity 30% and the second to soft light, opacity 60%. Desaturate (image --> adjustments --> desaturate) both layers.

Add two new layers. Fill the first (the one right next to the soft light layer mentioned above) with the color #121220 and set it to exclusion, 100%. Fill the other one with the color #4F4F5F and set it to soft light, 100%.

Add two more layers (this has so many steps were taking them two at a time). Past this texture from popcorn_bites in the first and set it to soft light, opacity 100%. Past this texture from colortone on the second and set it to lighen, opacity 100%.

Add yet another two layers. Past this texture from colorfilter on the first one, rotate it 90º CCW (edit--> transform--> rotate 90º CCW) and set it to overlay, opacity 100%. Past this texture, also by colorfilter on the second and set it to multiply, 100%.

Add some tiny text (copy/past the one on the
left) and set it to overlay, 100%.

Finally, choose the font ITC Franklin Gothic, at 18pt, anti-aliasing: strong. Write "caught" (or any other word, lol). Rasterize the layer (right-click on the layer and choose "rasterize layer from the drop-down menu). Now, select the top part of the word and press delete. Position the text as you see on the left, set the layer to soft light, 100%... and voilá you're done!
