Why is it it taking so long for full frame sensors to hit the just over 1k price mark?????!!!

Damn them.

So, with that in mind, I think it's time to upgrade my ancient Canon Rebel. I've only got two lenses for it -- the kit lens (18-55mm) and a 50mm 1.4. I'm considering changing to Nikon. Why did you go with Nikon instead of Canon? If it's because of the amount of equipment you already had prior to going digital, would you change now if you had no ties to one system or the other?

There are two reasons why the FF sensors are likely to remain high-end items for the forseable future: (a) FF (or, in homage to the D3, I should say "FX") sensors work as designed with 35mm glass, and if you have 35mm glass _that you care about_, then you've spent lots of money on it, so are in the market for a top-end camera, and (b) you want lots and lots and lots of photosites, and so are in the market for a top-end camera ( ... )

My special interest in full frame sensors centers around being in NYC with no space to shoot and wanting a 35mm lens that shoots like a 35mm and not like a 56mm (1.6x).

Right now I've got my eye on the 40D. The 30D wasn't enough of a jump for me to get excited though it was undoubtedly a nice refinement. The major reason I'm looking to upgrade the Rebel is shooting speed. The POS is slow and old. 4 raw pix... and then a long wait.

Thanks for the input though. I'll read through it again tomorrow with a completely sober mind and probably a couple more times while I look through reviews of the cameras and decide whether to jump systems or go 40D.

.... of course, a rebel part of me is thinking Leica M8....
