Anyway: me, me, I know! First off, I don't think they would have been used internally yet - I think that didn't come (haha) til the 80s. So, think something like the Hitachi magic wand. Actually, *really* think Hitachi magic wand, since the Wand was first brought out in the early 1970s (it was mentioned in a 1973 article, so should have been around by then).
Also, I challenge you: to write an erotic story, in Holmes? a fandom Holmes! of your choice HOLMES!!, prominently featuring the Manipulator. I am not certain it can be done.

a) the Magic Wand only recently came (haha) to the UK, so while I imagine that UK vibes were similar, I'm not sure exactly what they would have been like. Have you tried little_details? You may get an answer from someone who actually remembers.
b) the Manipulator did indeed have a steam engine, but that was in the room next door, and required doctors to shovel coal into it as it worked.
