It seems I may have been mistaken about the fate of the man in my closet and his noisemaker...

...upon further inquiry (that is, lying in bed staring at the ceiling), it seems a more likely possibility that he was killed by an army of gnomes with jackhammers who think it a good idea to get to work RIGHT WHEN I DECIDE TO GO TO BED.
