hakyeon/hyuk, hongbin/hyuk, 1000+ words, pg
sanghyuk has a date.
it's three o'clock in the morning when hakyeon is jolted awake by his cellphone ringing. he lets it ring three times before leaning over to pluck it from the nightstand. it's only because he loves sanghyuk so much that he even bothers to answer it, and he only knows it's sanghyuk calling him because sanghyuk had called him multiple times at similar hours earlier that week.
"it's three a.m." hakyeon says after clicking the speaker button. if sanghyuk doesn't have anything worth telling him, hakyeon thinks, then he'll walk over to his house and eat his phone.
"hyung i can't sleep."
"sanghyukkie. if you don't tell me what's bothering you right now so that i can hang up the phone and go back to sleep, i will make sure that you sleep forever."
there's a few seconds of silence before hakyeon hears sanghyuk drawing in a large breath, possibly in fear. "i can't sleep because i'm nervous about my date with-"
hakyeon hangs up the phone and pulls out the battery.
he accidentally steps on the discarded phone when he crawls out of bed that same morning. for a moment he's glad that his phone is one of those cheap ones that's basically composed of three parts, because he can pull out the battery as much as he wants.
when hakyeon turns the phone back on he sees a text message:
hyuuuungggg!
hyung
did you hang up on me or did your phone stop working?
im sorry for calling you so late... for the ninth time this week
but i really need your help!!!!!
about hongbin hyung!!!!! our date is on saturday!!!
HELP
ME
hakyeon types back no and gets ready for school.
when hakyeon approaches the school building he sees sanghyuk waiting outside of the gate, rocking on the balls of his feet. hakyeon feels a pang of guilt for hanging up on him, that is, until hongbin walks past them and flashes a tiny smile at sanghyuk, and sanghyuk is gripping hakeyeon's arm like he wants it to come off.
hakyeon doesn't mind helping sanghyuk. he just wants to not have to pick up his cellphone at weird hours or worry about his safety when hongbin is around. he's sat down with sanghyuk in his room and listened to him report on all of the things hongbin said to him that day and whether there were hints that hongbin might like sanghyuk as much as sanghyuk likes him. he's reassured sanghyuk by phone, email and face to face that hongbin did actually think he was cute and wanted to take him out for coffee on the weekend. he's patted sanghyuk's hair and rubbed his back when sanghyuk starts worrying that everything will go wrong. it's only a coffee date, hakyeon had said, you'll be fine.
he draws a line at certain things, like pretending to be hongbin so that sanghyuk can practice what to say. or going up to hongbin (who he's actually never said a word to) to ask for his opinion on a certain blond-haired, 181cm tall boy with a stupid grin.
it's five o'clock in the morning when hakyeon is woken up by a familiar ringtone. he bats his hand around in the dark, accidentally knocking his alarm clock off of the nightstand before picking up the phone.
"yes?"
"hyung, what if he thinks i dress weird."
"go back to sleep sanghyuk."
"but-"
"sanghyuk. you'll be fine."
later that morning at six o'clock he wakes up to see a text message:
what if i accidentally spill the coffee on him?
hakyeon's laughter wakes up his parents.
"tomorrow is the day." sanghyuk says in place of a greeting when hakyeon reaches the school gate. hakyeon slings an arm around sanghyuk's shoulders to comfort him. even though sanghyuk is taller, he feels tiny and nervous underneath hakyeon's arm as they make their way inside.
"you should sleep more," hakyeon suggests, "you look terrible."
"thanks."
"what's keeping you awake? is someone calling you at three a.m.?" hakyeon raises an eyebrow. it's a joke, and sanghyuk responds appropriately with an apologetic laugh.
"we've been texting."
hakyeon stops abruptly in the middle of the hallway. "what! han sanghyuk, you did not tell me about this. as your confidante i am absolutely offended, apologize right now."
sanghyuk is a light shade of red. "hyung," his voice is low, "please don't speak so loudly."
"why are you texting lee hongbin at such hours in the morning?" hakyeon ignores him. he's practically yelling now and people are starting to look at them, much to sanghyuk's horror. sanghyuk is red to the tips of his ears as he claps a hand over hakyeon's mouth. hakyeon's muffled laughter only stops when he hears a quiet voice behind them.
"good morning." hongbin smiles as if sanghyuk holding hakyeon in a headlock is an everyday occurence.
"good morning." sanghyuk flusters and releases hakyeon immediately. hakyeon looks at hongbin for confirmation.
the dark circles underneath hongbin's eyes are just as dark, if not darker, than the ones underneath sanghyuk's.
hakyeon attempts to stay up that night in case sanghyuk decides to call. he doesn't, and when hakyeon wakes up at six in the morning after having passed out at two o'clock, he finds that there are no text messages waiting for him either.
at ten o'clock hakyeon decides that something must be wrong; sanghyuk's date is at ten thirty. he phones sanghyuk and hears four beeps before he picks up.
"I OVERSLEPT."
hakyeon laughs, because oversleeping on the day of the event that's kept him up all night for two weeks sounds exactly like something sanghyuk would do.
how was it?
we had fun! i didnt spill coffee on him or make a fool out of myself
