I'm quite excited by the thought of a Conservative - Lib Dem coalition, however short lived. Not that it'll probably work out, can't see the old sticks from both parties bending far enough however much the leadership tries to reconcile things ( Read more... )

The conservatives worry me- an aquaintance of mine lives in Hammersmith which came under tory control in 2006. To date they've closed down several homeless shelters, introduced home care charges for the elderly, disabled and mentally ill when they said they wouldn't, closed the youth clubs, sold off the running track and park to some folks to play polo, and they're planning to sell off some of the council housing stock to property developers and have halted plans to build more housing. That's why having them in partnership with the LDs is a good thing in my eyes - have the LDs as the conscience while the Tories try to get on with the necessary but probably hugely unpopular business of reducing the deficit. The LDs seem to have a lot better out of the deal than I thought they would, just hope the Tories they ousted won't try to rock the boat... :S

The one good thing I'll say about Caroline Flint is this - at least she doesn't have Rosie Winterton's death breath!

The downside of Proportional Representation is that votes for the BNP and UKIP will actually count for something. :( Although the Alternative vote seems not too bad.
