Veg patch part 2

Dec 09, 2011 00:03

Part 2 is now up. :)

In other news, going to sleep in fresh bed clothes is amazing. Getting out of a bed that has fresh bedclothes on it the following morning is much harder than usual though.

I should add that our veg patch is currently looking more like your stage one (despite it being sorted, with the aid of tractor and manure last spring). And is feeling rather daunting!...

Thanks! That sounds like a good method, I'll definitely bear it in mind for future digging. :) The worst bit was the repeated clambering out of the trench to wheel the very heavy and wobbly barrow over to the spoil heap and back, so minimal spoil moving ftw.

The current plan is to leave it to settle over winter, then probably a bit more digging and forking and adding stuff, and THEN maybe I can plant stuff in it...

I'm sure your veg patch will have much attention put into it next year, and if not it's not going to go anywhere. Just gives the worms more time to mix all that manure in for you. :)

We've kind of bitten off more than we can chew with a large allotment sized patch - fine when it was weed free and tractored. Looking rather more challenging now the weeds are 6ft tall (actually the 6ft ones are fine; it's the mallows that are perennial and have MASSIVE roots that are daunting)... At the moment I'm going to 'worry about it later' ... But I'm also wondering about the organic farmers 'no dig' system - where they put the manure on TOP and let the worms do ALL the work. Apparently it's very successful if you leave it long enough (you need layers of cardboard to block out the light to kill the weeds)... I should look into it! I think it needs a lot of STUFF and TIME, rather than elbow grease; but I've never tried it... xxxx
