Unpopular Truths, Take Whatever

HERE IS A TRUTH. I am sort kind of incoherent, and tomorrow I should do a brief synopsis of all the shows I've first ep'd and what I read today. A lot of the shows will probably stick with me this season! Which is pretty amazing! But this was pretty much brought on by Eden of the East. Which the characters are designed by the lady who did Honey and ( Read more... )

That one character design is, and her interactions/tropes so far, and is really grating in an otherwise up my alley show.

man I need to get one of those edit buttons working. nobunaga_drill April 12 2009, 12:27:09 UTC
Though I didn't have a problem with it in Eden, I can definitely see where you're coming from.

I don't personally find it squick-worthy on principle (largely depends on the characters/series involved), but the way it tends to get obsessed over and sexualized in fandom and even a lot of series themselves creeps me right the hell out.

Yeeees. I think part of it is that it is very close to the Japanese ideal woman as I understand it, and it does get fetishistic there, and then it gets fetishised elsewhere, and it just makes me all kinds of uncomfortable.

Yeah, moe sort of creeps me out, too. I think for me it's because I find competence and self-determination really appealing, and moe seems to be...all about lacking that? Being sort of helpless and faily, and having that be charming? idk, maybe I'm misrepresenting it. But that seems to be a lot of the "appeal," and. ew.

It is, to be fair, one of the Japanese standards of an ideal woman at times past, as far as I can tell. And I'm really hoping the character will get better! Because the guy is really hilarious to watch for plot reasons, and I do want to finish the show, I'm just kind of irritated by the contrast here.

PRETTY MUCH, YES. I mean, the prince bit is probably the story editors/writers/director's and not the artist's responsibility to be fair, but it's just. AAAAAAAAAAAAH. A really awesome and interesting world system otherwise! And thus, sort of irritating.
