This is a mix I've been working on randomly throughout this summer. It's basically a selection of songs I feel should be played when going on a road trip - both for the leaving drive and the trip coming back.

WITH ARMS OUTSTRETCHED; Rilo Kiley
Now it's sixteen miles
To the promised land
And I promise you, I'm doing the best I can
Now some days they last longer than others
But this day by the lake went too fast
And if you want me
You better speak up, I won't wait
So you better move fast.

THE MESS INSIDE; The Mountain Goats
We went down to New Orleans
One weekend in the spring
Looked hard for what we'd lost
It was painful to admit it, but we couldn't find a thing
I wanted you to love me like you used to do.

GOOD NEWS; The Canadians
How so sweet the good news are
Like a goose flying to the sun
Let’s go so far to the river, where frogs and fishes smile
Here we could stay for a holiday.

LEFT AND LEAVING; The Weakerthans
Wait for the year to drown.
Spring forward, fall back down.
I'm trying not to wonder where you are.

I FEEL LIKE GOING HOME; Yo La Tengo
Sometimes late at night
While runnin' from the rain
Running from the voices
Filling up my brain
Now I wish they'd leave me alone
And let me be
To go off on my own
Let me be to go home
I feel like going home.

GONE; M83
Instrumental.

RUNNING OUT; Mates Of State
Let's trade this tired home for all it's worth in paper
Running out, running out
Running out you react
Tired of singing
You're tied up never tired of singing
Tired of singing.

PASSENGER SIDE; Wilco
Roll another number for the road
You're the only sober person I know
Won't you let me make you a deal,
Just get behind the wheel.

WEIGHTLESS; Nada Surf
Climbing from over-stimulated states
To hearing cold radio and license plates
But don’t dream that it’s a dream it is what it seems
That it’s a dream it is what is seems.

ROAD TO JOY; Bright Eyes
So I'm drinking, breathing, writing, singing
Every day I'm on the clock
My mind races with all my longings
But can't keep up with what I got.

THINGS I DON'T REMEMBER; Ugly Casanova
We undressed for the the tailor, you're skin was lightly salted
Open up a can of loudmouth, malted hi fives in your eyes
Pushed the gas and now I'm kissing your thighs
Looking for a purpose
How the hell'd we get here?

THE TREES AND THE WILD; Matt Pond PA
I can beat myself up
With success and daring
Better than you could
I think I'm pretty good.

LET THE COOL GODDESS RUST AWAY; Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
You're so different in a different way
But what goes up has so far down to fall
So go salvage
Some of that human dignity
It'll be a long hard road.

ROAD SIGNS ALWAYS LOOK BETTER LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER; Defiance, Ohio
She says we can take this weekend, drive out past city limits, keep on driving just as far as we can go. And we can take this weekend, and make it last forever, deal the shackles of our lives a breaking blow. Because to run away is victory, a tank of gas is freedom, and a starry night and open road is hope. We can take my fast car, or maybe just close our eyes, and when we open them the world we want can be the world we know.
