Sadly, there's really not all that much we CAN do, not until people wake up from this bewitched trance that the media has set upon them. In the meantime, we need more people that ARE informed to be willing to take risks in order to inform the "masses". I think a big part of the problem is simply... people don't care. Unfortunatly, you can't MAKE someone care, but you can make them feel guilty for their lack of compassion... I agree, simply protesting isn't nearly enough... I know that it makes you feel helpless and desperate to want to help, but I think that you're halfway there if you genuinely care about these people. If you can think of anything beyond protesting, let me know. I've had several ideas as well.
