Today a conservation crew was working on a trail a few miles down the creek. So my friend and I threw a canoe in and decided to paddle down to where they were working

In the random world of livejournal. In a twist and turn I stumbled upon your journal. And have been reading your updates about volunteering. Can I ask about your back story? How did you get involved? Why did you decide to get involved. What does this take to do? Money, time, etc. I am interested in taking a volunteer trip somewhere- I was thinking India, but I am re-thinking of putting my efforts towards the Miss, La. area.
How cool! I'm actually from Mississippi, and was living in New York when Katrina hit. I just moved back, so this was my first chance to get down and help. It has been incredibly rewarding (at the risk of sounding cliche... but it really has). I'm off for 6 months of a fun summer job in Alaska, so I thought it would be good to do something useful and socially engaged first.
If you are interested, the gulf coast needs so much in the way of volunteers.. If you have specific questions feel free to email me at meghyneman@gmail.com . I can help you connect with some good groups. I look forward to checking out your journal soon, when I have better access to internet!
i will send you an email. right now i am without employement. so i was thinking of a better way to spend my time than sitting around the house, walking the dog.
i went to school at millsaps. and have a lot of good friends that live down in mandeville, la and new orleans. and a lot of my friend's family live in the gulf shore areas. i want to come help. mostly i am concerned about how much money it cost. how much i am going to need to live.
i will email you: bkmiller11@hotmail.com for more information. thanks again.
That gator don't know what he's missing...he had a chance to have a piece of Meglet!! LOL You know me..I would have lost my head and backpaddled down the river and called someone to get me. David on the other hand would have told a pointless story somehow involving Spain, Pancakes, and something else like say..garbonzo beans just to tell us nothing at all
This made me laugh so hard! The idea of getting attacked by a gator while David talked about Spain and you franticly tried to single-handedly back-paddle the canoe.. ha! Perfect :)
Meg, I really think you should publish this story. I read it weeks ago and just reread it to my friend who is visiting from Ohio. You have a real gift with words, and I still tingle when I get to the last line. Hope your time in Mississippi is going well. We miss you. Bev P.S. The pears are gone, but we enjoyed each one!
Thank you! How sweet. I loved your email as well.. so glad you guys are enjoying the pears. It was the least I could do after you guys were so so good to me.
As far as publishing goes... it generally seems like more trouble than its worth.. plus I would have no idea where to send things.. and putting something on a blog technically makes it ineligible, as its "self-published".
(Or maybe that is all BS and its really just fear of rejection! :)
Thanks for the encouraging words though. I miss you guys too!
