I think it would freak the Doctor out totally if ever any of his companions echoed what former companions said. If anyone ever told him that "it stopped being fun", or "packing their goodies and going home". Those comments have such resonance with him.

It falls back to how much he enjoys and adores all his companions, especially those that are his best friends.

I agree with all those things. I think the goodies part is what did him in, and he doesn't want things to happen the way they did before. He would rather hurt in different ways rather than in the same ones and know how they hurt. Because there are different levels of hurt.
