Fandom: Only by the Dawn
Pairing: Nelson/Evie

Sometimes when Nelson sleeps, he dreams of long ago. He’s chained in the basement of a large mansion again and it’s cold. Fangs glint in candlelight and from somewhere nearby he hears Evie whimper. That sound kickstarts his heart and for the first time in his life, he wants to fight.

He shudders in his sleep when he feels a hand press against his chest and something flutter against his ear. He wakes up slowly and feels the sun beating down on him and realizes that the fluttering against his ear are Evie’s lips. She’s whispering to him, punctuating her words with kisses and giggles against the shell of his ear. Nelson relaxes, the bad dream cleared from his mind. A smile is already tugging at his lips and he blindly turns his head to capture her lips with his own. When he opens his eyes, he sees Evie and hears the sound of the waves crashing against the shore a few yards away. It’s hard to keep memories of bad times past in his mind when he’s here and he knows that they’re safe enough that they can lower their guard.

“You’re going to get sunburnt,” Evie teased, moving to straddle him, throwing her arms around his neck as he props himself up on his elbows. She is in a yellow and blue sundress and with a big, straw hat on her head.

“You’ll rub me down with aloe vera though, right?” he smiles.

“You know I will,” she replies and leans in to kiss him again.

From down the beach Nelson can hear the agitated squaking of seagulls and hears the beating of hundreds of wings as they all take flight. He turns his head and watches as a small figure in lavender two-piece barrels down the shoreline to them with her arms outstretched - pretending to fly is Corrine’s favorite pastime.

Evie moves off to his side with a laugh and Nelson leaps up to his feet and holds out his arms to catch their happy, giggling daughter as she bounds into his arms. He lifts her up in the air as he straightens and she throws her arms around his neck, crying out, “Daddy! Daddy!” Her dark brown ringlets tickle across his face as he kisses her.

Evie packs up the blanket and their lunch and all of Corrine’s toys - handmade by her father - and together the three of them trudge up the beach to their pastel blue cottage which sits atop a grassy knoll.

Nelson doesn’t know what day it is and most of the time he tells the time by the position of the sun. They celebrate holidays when they want to and create their own calendar. They’re one of several families who live in the area, but this is what his life has been reduced to. Actually, this is what his life has been expanded to - this stretch of beach, sunshine and seagulls and sand, waves constantly crashing against the shore, the laughter of his three year old daughter, the taste and smell and feel of Evie. This is all that he desires.
