Put a Smile Upon Your Face

Tamsin sat across from Kevin on the makeshift bed with her legs folded Indian-style. They were in his room in the warehouse where she was helping him hide out. He couldn’t stay in Dresden, but he didn’t want to go to LA and truthfully (though he wasn’t going to admit it just yet) he didn’t want to leave the brunette behind. She had tried to make the room as home-y as possible with flowers she picked and pillows she had snatched from home and now charcoal drawings she had done while he slept.

“So?” she said, leaning forward to look over the top of the drawings that he was looking at. “What do you think?” she asked, looking up at him with a bright smile. “You need some pictures in here,” she said, sitting back again and looking around the room. “Maybe next time I’ll do some in color instead.”

Kevin looked over the drawings. They were mostly of him or nature scenes and they were all really good. He couldn’t remember the last time someone had given him any sort of gift that required thought and time and expressed an actual sentiment. He realized now that he had been a bastard before he had been caught and the humans hadn’t been all that concerned with being nice to him - besides Maia and Tamsin, more so the latter. “I like them,” he smiled absentmindedly, not noticing it until Tamsin gasped dramatically.

“What?” he asked, looking up from the drawings.

She grinned then. “Is that. . .” she cocked her head to the side curiously. “A smile?”

“No,” he said quickly, the smile disappearing now. He averted his blue-grey eyes from her hazel gaze.

“Yes it was!” she cried triumphantly and if Kevin could blush, he would have done so.

“No, it wasn’t!” he argued. “My nose itched. I was making a face,” he hung his head and Tamsin ducked hers down to try to force him to make eye contact with her.

“Liar! You were making a smile!” she laughed.

“I’m tired,” he said, sweeping the papers from the bed so that he could stretch out and bury his face in a pillow.

“No you’re not,” she scoffed. “You’re a vampire who’s been sleeping all day.” She stretched herself out over his back and folded her arms over his shoulders, resting her head on them as she spoke into his ear. “You’re smiling right now, aren’t you?”

It was true, he was. And it felt so good to have something to smile about again.

“Absolutely not,” he said.

“You’re smiling!” Tamsin repeated in a singsong voice. “You’re smiling! You like the drawings! You like me!”

“I don’t!” he said into the pillow.

“You adore me! You think I’m pretty!” She laughed and kissed the nape of his neck before biting down on the skin there.

With reflexes too quick for Tamsin to see or anticipate, Kevin rolled over and caught her in his arms, turning her so that he could spoon her from behind.

“Shut up and stop being cute,” he complained into her hair, no longer trying to hide his smile.
