So, I'm sure a good chunk of the PA userbase has read this delicately titled opinion over at IGN.

The Wii is a Piece of Shit

Let's ignore the baseless whining at the beginning of the article, and focus on "It's not clear to me that Nintendo gives a s*** about games as an art form,". Suddenly, in one sentence, Hecker instantly defines "art" and " ( Read more... )

I mainly disagree with the fact that Nintendo is wrong for trying to make "simple and fun games". That may be their focus, but that isn't all they're doing, and because they are "simple and fun" they suddenly are not art.

Games don't need to be Art. The very idea you can try to define what "Art" is, is as pretentious as... well, for lack of a better term, Art.

We lose sight of the goal when we try to argue things as vague and ridiculous as "fun" and "system capabilities." Chris Hecker has already double-backed, because we know where his money is coming from... so I'll say this:

What you pull from a game will be a completely unique thing, what you pull is completely irrelevant. I know people who enjoy playing games seen as universally frustrating, because they see a challenge and that excites them. It's fun to be better at something when others merely accept they pull nothing from it. I've seen people adore the story of a game and completely forgive the fact that it could be seen as mundane and frustratingly boring to others.

Games are games. And that's what the argument should be about. The last thing I give a shit about right now are corporate practices, because then you venture into the business end of things. And that's a whole different

I just don't want someone to define art because they don't like the system they are working on.

Much less giving any sort of artistic credit to Sony.
