veronica_rich wrote a very interesting entry about the merits of writing fanfic and being judged for it recently, and I feel compelled to post my response/kudos here as well

I have thought about this many times myself. It was knowing that other people actually wanted to read what I was writing, that pushed me to write at all. (Fanfiction). I wonder, will it MEAN anything - why don't I do my original stuff instead, for REAL results?
Apparently the whole creating characters/ worldbuilding bit does count for something.
I won't deny that having an audience certainly helps motivation, and the near instant gratification in fanfiction is VERY nice indeed, especially when a fandom is at its apex. Ah the good ol' days of POTC... Or True Blood in its hay day. That was fun too.
As far as motivation to write original fiction, imagination and optimism for the future definitely play their respective parts. :) And while we're being truthful, living vicariously through storytelling too, for sure.
