Any help on a CD drive not reading disks any more?

I've posted this elsewhere, hoping for some response, but so far nothing has helped, so I figured I'd see if anyone here might have some bright ideas...

My tower has a CD-R drive but it's recently gone kaput. In explorer the drive shows up as "DVD/CD-RW Drive" whereas I know that it originally was just "CD Drive" and although it will whirr and the ( Read more... )

well.. I have a thought, but.. I'm not what you'd call a bright spark about this stuff ;) my last resort effort would be to open up the tower and remove the drive, boot up the computer, check the device manager to make sure nothing appears as a CD drive at all, and then put it back in and hopefully it'll recognize it and search for a compatible driver. (I said hopefully!)

I googled for it as well, and on this website http://panasonic.co.jp/mke/en/down/index.html it just doesn't have a download link for it.. I'm assuming the drive itself is older? Other than that.. I'd probably email the company and ask what you should do.

In the device manager, I uninstalled the CD Drive and then it went through the whole "found new hardware" business and installed it, etc. No solving of hte problem though, the only benefit of sorts is that now it says it's a Matshita when I look, as opposed to just listing "standard CD drives" under manufaturer in the properties...
