Is it just any folder? Mine used to do that if I had video files in the folder. Had something to do with the thumbnails and/or previews.

It's the main "my documents" folder. I've not changed the type of files that are within the subsequent folders, so I have no idea why this is happening, just started one day randomly

That used to happen to me to everytime I went to 'explore' any folder/directory - 'explorer encounters a problem' error... I went online and did research on the problem, and found a couple of 'fixes' that didn't work for me. In the end, I had to use a different program to get around, the one I used was called something like Gyula's Navigator, and I ended up really liking it, loved the whole double side by side double explorer windows.
