Once I met people who were gay and lesbian, and who were extremely nice people, that completely disappeared. So, maybe in a weird way, Coming Out Day is partly for the benefit of people like I was, people who needed to learn it was no big deal.
Yes, ITA. The more aware people become that there are gays and lesbians in their lives who are normal, everyday people, the less possible it will be to demonize us.
Joe Solmonese, who is president of the Human Rights Campaign, made that point in The Advocate this week: Commentary by Joe Solmonese.
But, it's a lot of responsibility to, by virtue of your orientation, become a defacto spokesperson for homosexuals everywhere. A person has to be pretty comfortable with themselves before they can be a walking poster child for others.
Coming out - its a journey, not a destination. :-D
This is not the least bit significant, but OK, I seriously am irritated at National Coming Out day, because I put like... 10 hours into building and painting a free-standing wall for Lambda Society, so people could put their coming out stories on it. I'm not even gay, why am I the one with splinters, covered in paint? ::General glare in the direction of Lambda Society:: I'm soooooooooooo using the account money to buy myself dinner tomorrow.
It was hilarious to see me unloading the wall from the back of my dad's pickup truck, in a skirt, heels, a suit jacket, and my hair in a low ponytail. Then there's Chad, my best friend and the President of Lambda, in dress slacks and a black turtleneck. It was hilarious, and quite possibly the biggest clusterfuck in the history of ever.
But the wall went over well. There are a lot of things that people wrote, so we're gonna keep it and display it next year, with another blank panel to add stuff.

Also? I'm currently praying to God that this PrimTimeLiveCrapShow doesnt go to ANY of the Nuclear Reactors that are owned by First Energy, because I SO do not want to deal with "why do you have lack security?!" calls tomorrow. PLEASE GOD let them pick on someone else. :prays:
