I haven't seen GOT, so I can't comment directly on what sounds like a soul destroying experience. I've heard it described as "LOTR with Boobies" but I have no direct experience.

However, I *have* seen Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy and I would be curious on your thoughts about this fantasy translation to the silver screen.

I've heard that George R R Martin is an LoTR fan, and I'd also heard some people comparing Game of Thrones to it. My feeling is that there are similarities only on the most superficial of levels. Both are fantasies drawing on names and tropes from the myth of our own world. Martin doesn't do the names as well as Tolkien, but then, who does? Neither is very good at portraying functioning societies; my opinion is that Tolkien conceals this better than Martin by diverting attention away from the societies rather than focusing on them ( ... )

I felt exactly the same about 'Deadwood' by (I think) the same people, including hoping that my girlfriend wouldn't want to watch the second series.

Deadwood was recommended to me, and I occasionally thought I should get round to watching it. I never did, though. It probably helped that my wife hates Westerns.

Conversely, she got into Lost, which I disliked based on the first few episodes. Eventually she managed to persuade me to watch the whole thing through with her, and my opinion mellowed. Perhaps because I wasn't a massive fan from the start, I'm actually more forgiving of the ending than most fans seem to be.
